100 cases of malignant melanoma of the choroid have been treated be xenon-photocoagulation between 1958 and 1976. 60% of the cases have been cured for more than 5 years. Enucleation was necessary in 25 cases. Metastases appeared in 13 cases.

Penetrating keratoplasty was done in 112 patients. Two types of donor material were used: whole eyes preserved in a moist chamber at 4°C, and corneoscleral segments preserved in MK-medium 4°C. Comparison of the postoperative results was done. No significant correlation was found between the postoperative results and the difference between donor and recipient age. The subjective evaluation of donor material was not accurate. The death-to-enucleation time of 6.1 ± 6.2h was tolerated and had no significant influence on the postoperative result. A partial relationship was found between postoperative vision and death-to-surgery time. The earlier the surgery, the better were the results. Both preservation methods, whole eyes in a moist chamber and corneoscleral segments in MK-medium, were useful in cases with good prognosis, e.g. keratoconus. The MK-preservation method was found to be superior in cases with corneal opacity and vascularization.

The authors report the results of a study on 96 subjects affected with thalessemia minor. The study was made at the Center for the Study of Microcythemia of the OORR in Naples. Of extreme scientific interest is the finding of ocular involvement in 33.3% of the cases. Therefore, after formulating a pathogenetic hypothesis, the authors plan more involved studies and research on these patients.

In a group of 44 patients, fundus photographs were taken before and after mandibular nerve anesthesia and examined by densitometry. These patients were divided into subgroups receiving 4 cm3 of Xylocitin 2% alone or in combination with 0.005% norepinephrine, or 0.00125 or 0.002% epinephrine. In the presence of epinephrine, the retinal arterioles reacted with a temporary age-dependent narrowing. A placebo group received normal saline or had just the needle inserted. With one interesting exception, the reactions were minimal. The cause of this reaction is a multifactorial one. In the first period, vagovagal reflexes are important; in the later phase, processes comparable to autoregulation play the main role.

A possible reason for secondary glaucoma may be an unphysiological accumulation of proteins or blood in the aqueous humor. A positive Tyndall phenomenon shows an increase in the proteins of the aqueous humor, although a negative Tyndall does not exclude this. This study shows that disruption of blood vessel membrane barriers in the retina and uvea leads to an increase in low molecular weight proteins in the aqueous humor. Contrary to current knowledge, it is discussed that overtaxing of flow mechanisms by these additional proteins can cause so-called protein glaucoma.

The quality of binocular vision in unilateral aphakia was tested in presbyopic patients. 10 of them were corrected by a contact lens, 10 by an intraocular implant. Unilateral aphakic young patients were submitted to the same tests. In the young patients the unilateral accommodation proves to be the main obstacle to binocularity. In the presbyopics there is no difference between intraocular and contact lens correction as to the quality of binocular functions. Which one of these two alternatives for the correction of unilateral aphakia should be preferred in the individual case must, therefore, be decided upon by other criteria than binocular vision. The results with unilateral spectacle correction demonstrate that binocular vision cannot be achieved by compensation of aniseikonia alone.

The hypothesis, derived from previous studies, that the off response forms the main part of the second positive wave (P2) in the occipital response to the presentation of patterns was tested by using stimuli of various durations. It was found that the off response merges with P2 of the on response in the combined on-off response. The question, however, whether the on response or the off response contributes most to the combined on-off response could not be answered. By applying hemifield stimulation, the experiments furthermore confirm the concept of the presence of a double dipole in the hemisphere contralateral to the stimulated side.

Lactic deshydrogenase isoenzymes in different parts of the ocular tissues and humors were analyzed. An appreciation in crossing of the lactic deshydrogenase concentration was indicated. In the human eye, the largest quantities of lactic deshydrogenase were found in the cornea and in the vitreous and aqueous humors, where isoenzymes 3,4, and 5 are the most numerous. Lactic deshydrogenase was found in small quantities only in the conjunctiva and in the lacrimal gland. In the bovine eye, the proportion of isoenzymes is different. The chemical constitution of human serum isoenzymes seems to differ from that of the tissues and liquids in the bovine eye (their mobility is different). Therefore, the results obtained with bovine eyes cannot be applied to human eyes. The largest quantity of lacrimal lactic deshydrogenase isoenzymes comes from the cornea, any recent corneal lesion causing an increase in isoenzyme 4.
