摘要:
SummaryThe population size and breeding success of Emperor PenguinsAptenodytes forsteriat the Auster and Taylor Glacier colonies were estimated during the 1988 breeding season. At Auster a total of 10 963 pairs produced about 6350 fledglings for a breeding success of 58%. At Taylor Glacier about 2900 pairs raised 1774 fledglings for a breeding success of 61%. Fledglings left Taylor Glacier over a period of 33 days at a mean mass of 10.56 kg.

摘要:
SummaryThe lekking behaviour of the Standardwing Bird of ParadiseSemioptera wallaciiis described for the first time, including a communal arboreal display. The biology and distribution of the species is reviewed. Whilst it may be overlooked in the field the species appears to be patchily distributed and may be threatened unless measures are taken immediately to protect undisturbed areas of its habitat.

摘要:
SummaryAn analysis of cine film, to 24 frames per second, of lekking and displaying male Standardwing Birds of ParadiseSemioptera wallaciiprovided the first opportunity to describe displays and posturing detail of this previously little known monotypic genus. A vertical aerial display conspicuously exhibits the previously unremarked upon contrastingly pale primaries in fully plumaged males. This aerial display, whilst unlike any previously described for Paradisaeidae, may be homologous to inverted perch displays byParadisaeaspp. as are other displays of the Standardwing. Male lekking, displays and wing posturing, display perch foliage clearing, vocalisations and female plumage of the Standardwing suggest a much closer affinity toParadisaeaandCicinnurus (Diphyllodes) than previously considered. Views on the position ofSemiopterawithin Paradisaeidae, and behavioural characters shared by species considered closely related to it, are discussed.

摘要:
SummaryObservations on eight pairs of Pied OystercatchersHaematopus ostralegus longirostrisat Mortimer Bay provide information on breeding success and adult survival. The species is long-lived but the low annual adult mortality is offset by low breeding success. Compared with other populations, the Australian race is characterised by a relatively small clutch size, a long incubation period, a long interval between hatching and flying and a very high age at first breeding. I suggest that breeding territories are at a premium, and that many sites are only marginal.

摘要:
SummaryThe composition, relative abundance and foraging behaviour of birds were recorded in subalpine and alpine environments in the Snowy Mountains throughout the period 1977–1988. The numbers of species and individuals recorded decreased markedly with increasing altitude, with 63 species being observed regularly in the subalpine zone and 29 of these also occurring in the alpine zone. Bird populations showed a marked decline during autumn and winter, particularly after snow cover was established. All birds left the alpine zone for at least part of the winter period, and only six species remained throughout winter in the subalpine zone. Extensive snow-cover modified bird foraging behaviour by preventing feeding in the shrub layer and at ground level, thus restricting feeding to the trunks and foliage of snow gums and to the surface of the snow. This led to a reduction in bird diversity when compared to nearby snow-free montane habitats. In late winter and early spring an increase in arthropod fall-out on the remaining snow and flowering by the bird-pollinated shrubGrevillea victoriae, provided additional food for insectivorous birds and nectar feeders. With increased availability of food resources and foraging niches during spring and early summer high numbers of migratory birds were attracted to the region.
