摘要:
SUMMARYRecher, H. F. 1971. Sharing of habitat by three congeneric honeyeaters. Emu 71: 147–152.Two very similar honeyeatersPhylidonyris nigraandP. novaehollandiaeprefer somewhat different habitats and have very different distributions, but in an area of overlap on the central coast of New South Wales both species frequent the same food-plants and may nest in the same habitats. Differences in their use of a common nesting area are not significant, and the species maintain mutually exclusive territories. However, peak-nesting of the birds occurs at different times of the year and the presence of large numbers ofnigranesting in the early spring may reduce the nesting opportunities ofnovaehollandiae.A third species,P. melanops, also occurs withnigraandnovaehollandiae, but it forages differently and nests in a different part of the habitat.

摘要:
SUMMARYThomas, D. G., and A. J. Dartnall. 1971. Moult of the Curlew Sandpiper in relation to its annual cycle. Emu 71: 153–158.Calidris ferruginea, in common with other long-distance migrants, moults flight feathers while in winter quarters. It requires 125–130 days to renew the primaries. A schematic representation of the annual cycle has been constructed from the fragmentary data available in the literature. It is shown that the only period free from physiological strain is that spent on the wintering grounds. Thus, the demands on reserves of energy to grow new feathers do not coincide with other events of the annual cycle that also make demands on reserves of energy.

摘要:
SUMMARYMiddleton, A. L. A. 1971. The gonadal cycle of the Goldfinch in south-eastern Australia. Emu 71: 159–166. Between December 1962 and February 1965 307 male and 205 female Goldfinches were collected for gonadal study. All testes were weighed and examined histologically to provide data on the annual testicular cycle. Ovaries were not examined in histological detail, and the ovarian cycle was assessed on the measurement of the largest ovarian follicles. The seasonal change in pigmentation of the bill and the development of the brood patch were found to be reliable field criteria on which to assess the gonadal condition of living birds. The results of the study are discussed in relation to the environmental, factors which may regulate the timing of breeding.

摘要:
SUMMARYSpellerberg, I. F. 1971. Arrival and departure of birds at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. Emu 71: 167–171.Nine species of birds were recorded at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, between 1963 and 1966. Of these, two were penguins (Adelie, Emperor), four were petrels (Antarctic, Giant, Snow, Wilson's Storm), two were skuas (Brown, McCormick) and one was a gull (Dominican). The arrival and departure dates are documented where possible, and it appears that the timing of breeding and moult is adjusted to the climate and resources of food at this high latitude. Breeding behaviour of some species is synchronized so that there is a shorter breeding period at this latitude than to the north.
