摘要:
SummaryAn account of the 15 muttonbird colonies on Phillip Island, Victoria, is presented. The history of these is briefly discussed in relation to the island's history, and compared with the present situation. While there has been an increase in known colonies, there has been a considerable decrease in area of colonies on the island. Factors such as over-exploitation of muttonbirds in the past and grazing over colonies have now disappeared, but in their place have been left the introduced predator, the fox, and a potentially more important factor, human utilization of colony areas. It is concluded that the present island colonies are generally secure at a reduced level.

摘要:
SummaryAs part of a study of the European GoldfinchCarduelis carduelisnear Melbourne, Victoria, the annual moult was observed in 512 birds between January 1963 and February 1965. The moult period occurred between December and May with the peak of activity in February and March. The moult sequence is discussed and is essentially similar to the normal passerine pattern with the exception of the tail moult. A distinct overlap between the breeding season and the moult period was observed. The significance of this is discussed in the light of recent metabolic studies and studies of moult.

摘要:
SummarySpecies of Procellariiformes have been counted about the Narrows of Cook Strait between the North Island and the South Island from 1944 to 1968. These data comprise 24 complete crossings supplemented by observations made on other trips or from land over the same period. The occurrences of the species in season are discussed. There are few common species and the tides of the area probably influence their distribution.

摘要:
SummaryThe Australian treecreepers of the genusClimacterisshow little affinity with the typical treecreepers Certhiidae and have been separated as a family, the Climacteridae. It has been suggested that they may be related to the Australian warblers Acanthizinae; but they appear to show affinities with honeyeaters Meliphagidae. A comparative examination of a range of characters shows that they resemble the honeyeaters in many of these, resemble the warblers only in some aspects of plumage pattern, and evidence of relationship from other characters is inconclusive. It is suggested, on the basis of present information, that the honeyeaters are the most likely group to have given rise to the Australian treecreepers, and that rather little adaptation would have been needed for this.

摘要:
SummaryThe relation betweenNeositta leucopteraandstriatais discussed. A critical examination of the records of their occurrence in northern Queensland suggests that they are allopatric and do not interbreed. The barrier between them may lie between the Flinders and Leichhardt Rivers, and coincide with a barrier already noted between other bird species. It is proposed to call this the‘Carpentaria Barrier’.The validity ofN. leucocephalais examined critically in the light of its contact withchrysoptera. It is concluded that a narrow zone of unnamed hybrids between the two occurs in north-eastern NSW and south-eastern Queensland, that Gould'sleucocephalais the correct name for white-headed birds with type locality Moreton Bay, and thatlumholiziis a synonym.
