摘要:
SUMMARYThomas, D. G., and A. J. Dartnall. 1971. Moult of the Red-necked Stint. Emu 71: 49–53.Timing and duration of moult of the Red-necked Stint are analysed from specimens collected at the southern limit of the winter range. The mean duration of primary moult is 110–115 days, starting between late August and early December and finishing between mid-December and late March. Secondary moult finishes before primary moult is completed, but moult of rectrices may not finish until shortly after. Thus, moult of the flight feathers coincides with the time spent on the wintering grounds. Pre-basic moult starts before birds arrive on the wintering grounds, and pre-alternate body-moult finishes after they leave. Moult of flight feathers does not start until the pre-basic moult is well advanced and does not finish until after the pre-alternate moult has started. Body-moult may be suspended during migration.

摘要:
SUMMARYParker, S. A. 1971. Taxonomy of the Northern Territory friarbirds known asPhilemon buceroides gordoni.Emu 71: 54–56.Examination of all available material from the range ofPhilemon buceroides gordoniMathews as defined by Salomonsen showed that two taxa were confused under the one name, truegordoniof Melville Island and coastal mangroves of the Northern Territory mainland, and nominatebuceroidesSwainson of the sandstone gorges of the Arnhem Land escarpment, the latter form previously known only from Timor and Savu. In view of their pronounced ecological differences on the mainland, gordoniis here elevated to rank of species. Vernacular names for both forms are discussed.

摘要:
SUMMARYNorman, F. I. 1971. Movement and mortality of Wood Ducks banded in Victoria. Emu 71: 57–60.Results of banding 1,533 Wood Ducks, almost all in Victoria, are discussed. Dispersal from the main banding locality (Serendip, near Geelong) was generally northwards into the plains of inland Victoria and southern New South Wales; similar results were obtained from other banding localities. Movement was restricted, about 60 per cent of recoveries being within 200 km of the banding site. Shooting provided most recoveries, and estimates of mortality, based on return of bands from shot birds, indicate that some 57 per cent of birds die within one year of banding. Results of X-ray studies show that adult males are more prone to shooting than other age or sex-groups, but shooting of the species is not so severe in Victoria as elsewhere. The species will probably remain secure while habitat remains in its present state.

摘要:
SUMMARYEckert, J. 1971. Birds of the Franklin Islands and Eyre Island, South Australia. Emu 71: 61–64.Birds observed on the Franklin Islands, off Smoky Bay, SA, from 16 to 23 February 1969 are described. The islands harbour a relict population of a stick-nest ratLeporillus conditor jonesi, sole remnant of a genus formerly widespread, but now vanished from the mainland.Tyto albais shown to be the main predator of this mammal. Vast numbers ofPuffinus tenuirostrisbreed on the islands. Birds seen on Eyre Island during a short visit are listed.Pelecanus conspicillatusis recorded breeding there andLimosa lapponicais recorded from Eyre Peninsula for the first time.

摘要:
SUMMARYGravatt, D. J. Aspects of habitat use by New Zealand honeyeaters, with reference to other forest species. Emu 71: 65–72.Division of resources and use of habitat by some New Zealand forest birds is discussed. A measurement is made of the importance of nectar, fruit and insect foods in the diet of the honeyeaters (Meliphagidae). The honeyeaters show seasonal variation in their diet, and the Bellbird is found to be more insectivorous than either the Tui or the Stitchbird, especially during winter. Morphological differences probably play a major role in precluding competition for food between honeyeaters during periods of coarse-grained foraging, e.g. at times of seasonal nectar‘booms’. Separation between habitats is most evident during winter when food is less abundant. Also, for all species investigated, habitat separation is evident during fine-grained foraging. Niches appear to be‘broad’and it is suggested that this may be because diversity of species within the habitat is low.
