摘要:
SUMMARYJohnstone, G. W. 1974. Field characters and behaviour at sea of giant petrels in relation to their oceanic distribution. Emu 74: 2.09–218.The distinctive field characters ofMacronectes halliandM. giganteus are described. Records of giant petrels observed from ships travelling between Australia, Macquarie Island and Antarctica in summer show that hallitends to follow ships whereasgiganteustends not to do so. With this difference in behaviour as an aid to identifying these otherwise similar species, it is shown that from November to Marchhallioccurs mostly to the north of the Antarctic Convergence andgiganteusmostly to the south. Earlier literature is reviewed in relation to these findings.

摘要:
SUMMARYWoinarski, J. C. Z. 1974. A comparison of the ground-nesting of two species of pardalote. Emu 74: 219–222.Fifty-eight nests of the Eastern Striated PardalotePardalotus omatusand the Spotted PardaloteP. punctatuswere studied in north-eastern Victoria.P. ornatusnests in the subsoil where it is unprotected by surrounding vegetation. The entrances of its nests face south, lessening penetration by sunlight.P. punctatusnests in the topsoil where the nesting burrow is shaded by vegetation. The size of the entrance of nests ofP. ornatusprobably decreases with increasing altitude. The two species are probably influenced in choosing sites of nests by microclimate, predation and ease of construction.

摘要:
SUMMARYNorman, F, I. 1974. Notes on the breeding of the Pied Cormorant near Werribee, Victoria, in 1972, 1972 and 1973. Emu 74: 223–227.Breeding data are presented for what is apparently the only permanent colony of Pied Cormorants in Victoria, Information relating to clutch-size, hatching and fledging success is given for 1971, 1972 and 1973 breeding seasons. Dimensions of eggs and data relating to nests are also given. Nest-building and egg-laying were initiated in mid-May each year, with most eggs being laid by late July. Laying in 1972, when most complete observations were made, was characterized by an initial peak before mid-Jane and a subsequent but lower peak between mid-August and early September. Hatching started in mid-June and followed the bimodality imposed by egg-laying. Clutch-size varied between 1 and 5, but was on average 3.32 eggs (n = 256, S.D.±0.77) for the three seasons. Variation in average clutch-size between seasons were also noted and it was found that early (before mid-August) clutches were slightly bigger and more successful than those laid later, Clutches from which young hatched were also bigger than those from which no young were raised. For 162 clutches in 1971 and 1972 followed through to the fledging of young, an average of 3.15 eggs produced 1.36 young of which 0.83 fledged. The breeding season is discussed with respect to the physical environment and data relating to availability of potential food. Samples of food taken from the young in the nest suggest a tentative connexion between the local abundance of clupeoid fish and the winter and early spring breeding season.

摘要:
SUMMARYMasters, J. R., and A. L. Milhinch. 1974. Birds of the Shire of Northam, about 100 km east of Perth, WA. Emu 74: 228–244.A systematic account of birds observed in the Shire of Northam between 1930 and 1973 is given, Three broad districts can be recognized in the Shire; forests in the west, the Avon valley in the centre and wheatbelt in the east. Annual rainfall decreases eastwards across the Shire from 816 to 408 mm and varies cyclically. Clearing for agricultural purposes has destroyed and is still destroying much wooded habitat or forest. A marked frontier for some species runs through the Shire. Change of status of some species has clearly been caused by agricultural development and many species respond to change in rainfall.

摘要:
SUMMARYRich, P. V., and R. H. Green. 1974. Footprints of birds at South MT Cameron. Tasmania. Emu 74; 245–248.During 1962, sluicing operations in a pit of the old Endurance Tin Mine in north-eastern Tasmania exposed a number of tracks, probably mid-Tertiary in age, that apparently represent large birds, members of the Australian endemic family Dromornithidae. The group, well known in sediments from mid to late Tertiary and Pleistocene in age, was previously represented only by osteological and possibly oological remains.

摘要:
SUMMARYLlewellyn, L. C. 1974, New records of red-tailed black cockatoos in south-eastern Australia with a discussion of their plumages. Emu 74: 249–253.New records of distribution, a nesting occurrence and the feeding of the Glossy Black Cockatoo are given. This species can readily be distinguished as adults and immatures, males and females by characters of plumage. The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo can be distinguished only as adult males or others. The two species are compared and the need for careful checking of distribution emphasized.
