摘要:
SummaryThe breeding population ofSula bassana serratoron Lawrence Rocks has apparently increased in recent years. In December 1961, 639 breeding pairs were counted.Banding has shown that juvenileS. b. serratorof the Australian breeding population, like otherS. bassanapopulations, leave their natal colonies and move long distances into areas with a warmer sea temperature. They apparently stay there for two to four years, after which they usually return to the natal area.

摘要:
SummaryThis paper records inconclusive evidence obtained in the Western Highlands District of the Territory of Papua and New Guinea concerning the possible propagation by birds of sweet-potato,Ipomoea batatas(L.) Lam., seed. The Swamp Quail,Synoicus ypsilophorus, is on present evidence a plausible agent, while a number of other species cannot be ruled out of consideration. Native informants' statements that the Willie Wagtail,Rhipidura leucophrys, is responsible are reported and assessed. The possibility that migratory birds such as the Golden Plover,Charadrius dominicus, or the Peregrine Falcon,Falco peregrinus, could be responsible for the initial introduction of the sweet-potato, or for the introduction of new varieties, to the New Guinea Highlands and some other regions of the Pacific is discussed: although this seems highly improbable, it cannot be altogether discounted. It is suggested that ornithologists and aviculturalists may be able to throw light on a complex botanical and anthropological problem.

摘要:
SummaryA three-year study, combining visual censuses with mist netting and banding, was conducted along a one and a half mile traverse in an area of wet sclerophyll forest in the Brindibella Range, near Canberra. Of the 63 species recorded, 30 per cent, were casual visitors, and one species was a winter resident. A total of 1,720 birds and 35 species was banded, of which 426 (25%) were retrapped, and 206 (12%) were retaken in a subsequent breeding season. The avifauna of the region area studied is strikingly similar to that of the upper Snowy River region in Victoria, and it is suggested that, ecologically, there is little or no gap between the two.

摘要:
SummaryNorth Island and the larger islands of the Wallabi Group, consisting partly of continental dunes, have a much richer flora and terrestrial fauna than the southern half of the Houtman Abrolhos, but, lacking breeding colonies of such spectacular birds as the noddies, they have not received from ornithologists so much attention as the southern islands. This paper is an annotated list of the 54 species of birds recorded from North Island and the Wallabi Group. The avifauna consists of 12 land-birds, six of which are certainly resident, and 42 marine and littoral species, of which 13 are resident and five are regular breeding visitors.
