摘要:
SUMMARYDiamond, J. M. 1975. Preliminary results of an ornithological exploration of the islands of Vitiaz and Dampier Straits, Papua New Guinea. Emu 76: 1–7.The avifaunas of all major islands and many small islands in Vitiaz and Dampier Straits, Papua New Guinea, were surveyed in 1972. Marsh and waterbirds found at Lake Buan and the crater lakes of Umboi includedEgretta intermedia, Dendocygna arcuata, Dendrocygna guttataandHimantopus himantopus.Bismarck endemic species of restricted distribution occurring in the mountains of Umboi wereHenicophaps foersteri, Ducula melanochroa, Zoothera talaseae, Rhipidura dahliandZosterops hypoxantha.Other records of interest are the first record ofAnas acutafor the New Guinean region;Accipiter luteoschistaceus, Accipter meyerianusandPhylloscopus trivirgatuson Umboi;Falco berigoraandNumenius madagascariensison Long;Turdus poliocephalusin the mountains of Tolokiwa; andErythrura trichroain the mountains of four islands.Pachycephala pectoralisandPachycephala melanura dahliwere taken in the same net-line on Tolokiwa, confirming that they are separate species. Black myzomelid populations of the Bismarcks, such aspammelaena, appear to be related to the myzomelid superspecies of the Solomon Islands, not toMyzomela nigrita.

摘要:
SUMMARYCrome, F. H. J. 1975. Some observations on the biology of the Cassowary in northern Queensland. Emu 76: 8–14.The CassowaryCasuarius casuariusand its diet were studied in the Lacey's Creek—Clump Point area of northern Queensland. Birds are usually solitary and territorial, females apparently dominant over males. Males incubate and rear the chicks. Females may mate with more than one male during the year. Some agonistic and sexual displays are described. Development of chicks is briefly outlined. The birds take three years to develop full adult plumage. Cassowaries eat fruit of over sixty-seven species. The family Lauraceae is most important. The breeding season, June to October, corresponds with the time of maximum abundance of fruit in the forest.

摘要:
SUMMARYFrith, H. J., J. L. McKean and L. W. Braithwaite. 1976. Sexual cycles and food of the dovesStreptopelia chinensisandS. senegalensisin Australia. Emu 76: 15–24.The sexual cycles, food and feeding habits ofS. chinensisin Sydney, NSW, Melbourne, Vic., and Perth, WA, and those ofS. senegalensisin Perth have been examined.InS. chinensisin each city and inS. senegalensisin Perth, many males were producing abundant sperm and many females had enlarged ovarian follicles in each month of the year. Nevertheless there were cycles of gonadal size in each city. The gonads were greatest in spring and summer and least in autumn and winter but inS. chinensisthe phase of the cycle differed between the cities. There was reason to believe that the food, waste grain and bread, was abundant at all times and that its availability was not greatly influenced by rainfall and other environmental factors. Supply of food probably was not the sole cause of the difference in phase of the cycles. Some of the difference in phase would have been caused by different genetic composition of the populations in the three cities.

摘要:
SUMMARYDow, D. D. 1976. The use and misuse of the coefficient of variation in analysing geographical variation in birds. Emu 76: 25–29.The Coefficient of variation (CV) provides a method of measuring intrinsic variation in a population because increases in variance caused by increases in means are appropriately adjusted in a common percentage scale. Lewontin (1966) described a statistical test for the difference between two CVs that approximates the result obtained by transforming each original datum to its natural logarithm, then testing for equality of variances in the usual manner. Two ornithologists, at least, have erred in using this test in their work consistently in the form of a one-tailed rather than a two-tailed hypothesis. Here I consider using a measure of the standard error of the CV in Student's t-test as a possible alternative to the F-test of Lewontin. The relative performance of the two tests was compared empirically in 1,770 comparisons generated from published data. The total number of significant results did not differ if only the five per cent level of probability was used. But at finer levels when samples were both small (5–22) or both moderately large (23–66) the F-test yielded a higher number of significant results than the t-test. With samples of mixed size, the t-test produced more significant results. It is obvious that the sizes of sample commonly published in studies of relative variation in morphological features of birds are much too small to be expected to show any but the most gross differences. The most powerful and flexible technique appears to be that of transforming data to their natural logarithms, then using the methods of ordinary analysis of variance.

摘要:
SUMMARYBurton, T. C., and A. A. Martin. 1976. Analysis of hybridization between Black-backed and White-backed Magpies in south-eastern Australia. Emu 76: 30–36.A method for quantitative analysis of the variation in dorsal patterns of magpies was developed. Several transects across the zone between fully black-backed and fully white-backed Magpies in Victoria and south-eastern New South Wales were made and the dorsal patterns of all adult birds seen were recorded. The phenomenon is best interpreted as a zone of overlap with hybridization. Further data are needed to elucidate the dynamics of this zone; in particular, it is not clear whether the zone is stationary or moving southward.

摘要:
SUMMARYSmith, G. T., and F. N. Robinson. 1976. The Noisy Scrub-bird: an interim report. Emu 76: 37–42.The Noisy Scrub-bird is found only at Two Peoples Bay. Its habitat is the wetter areas of the Jarrah-Marri forest. Males defend their territories throughout the year and play no part in nest building, incubation or feeding the chick. Breeding takes place in winter. If the egg or chick is lost the female may build another nest and re-lay. Only one female is associated with a male territory. The male has two distinct types of song (territorial and short song), a three-noted call and three single call notes. Females normally give only call notes. Mimicry is rare. The population has probably been fairly stable at 44±4 territorial males for at least the last ten years.
