摘要:
SUMMARYRICH, P. V. and R. J. SCARLETT. 1976.Another look at Megaegotheles, a large owlet-nightjar from New Zealand. Emu 77: 1–8.Megaegotheles, a Pleistocene to sub-Recent relative of the Australasian owlet-nightjarsAegotheles, is re-examined and found to exhibit increase in body-size with increasing latitude. Although the wings of this form are not markedly larger than those ofAegotheles, the hind limb is markedly larger, thus suggesting thatMegaegothelesmay have been flightless or nearly so, the first-known occurrence of this phenomenon in the Caprimulgiformes.

摘要:
SummaryMARCHANT, S. 1976. A seawatch on the southern coast of New South Wales. Emu 76: 9–18.A seawatch was made for more than 550 hours from 8 December 1973 to 27 October 1974 from Burrewarra Point near Bateman's Bay, NSW. Four species of albatross were recorded from May to October; the Black-browed Albatross was commonest in June and July, the Wandering Albatross in August and September and the Shy Albatross (during October. The Yellow—nosed Albatross was scarce. Giant-petrels occurred from June to October. The shearwaters,Puffinus pacificusandtenuirostriswere absent from May to August; the passage oftenuirostrisat the end of September was spectacular, details of which are given. Other seabirds (Pufflnus gavia, Pachyptilaspp,Pelecanoides urinatrix, Morus serrator, Phalacrocorax carbo, Larus novaehollandiae, Sterna bergliand S.striata) occurred in fluctuating numbers with less obvious patterns of occurrence and movement.

摘要:
SUMMARYRATKOWSKY, A. V., and D. A. RATKOWSKY 1976. The birds of the Mt Wellington Range, Tasmania. Emu 77: 19–22.The avifauna of the Mt Wellington Range, Tasmania, was observed at elevations above 240 metres during the period 1 October 1975 to 31 January 1976. A total of sixty-two species was recorded and for each observation note was taken of the habitat in which the sighting occurred, the basis for this being a previously published survey of the vegetation. Use of computer-assisted classification procedures enabled both species and vegetation zones to be clustered into groups having the greatest similarity.

摘要:
SUMMARYPHILLIPS, R. E. 1977 Notes on the behaviour of the New Zealand Shore Plover. Emu 77: 23–27.The Shore Plover is the rarest of the endemic New Zealand plovers with only eighty-two individuals at the time of my visit. The species breeds on a single island, South East Island, of the Chatham Island group, about 800 kilometres east of Christchurch, and has been absent from the main islands of New Zealand for nearly 100 years. The birds are found primarily along rocky shores adjacent to extensive wave-washed rock-shelves on which the birds feed. The birds were paired and territorial in the post-breeding season (March). Audiospectrograms of vocalizations are given and the behavioural circumstances in which they occurred are described.

摘要:
SUMMARYCPX, J. B., and D.H. CLOSE 1977. Interbreeding of Little and Fairy Terns. Emu 77: 28–32.Before 1968 the Little TernSterna albifronsand the Fairy TernS.nereiswere thought to be allopatric breeders. Since then, overlap of their breeding ranges has been established between Gulf St Vincent, SA, and eastern Bass Strait. Interbreeding in the former region occurred in 1975 and probably before.S.albifrons sinensisandS.nereis nereisare probably the progeny of isolated breeding populations of common ancestry. Where the breeding range of the former has recently overlapped that of the latter, interbreeding may occur, perhaps when a bird lacks a mate of the same species.
