摘要:
SUMMARYMASON, I.J., J.L. McKEAN and M.L. DUDZINSKI. 1984. Geographical variation in the Pheasant CoucalCentropus phasianinus(Latham) and a description of a new subspecies from Timor. Emu 84: 1–15.From traits of sex, age, and nuptial and non-breeding plumages, subspecies ofCentropus phasianinuswithin Australia are described, relating size of wing, tail and bill to latitude. Races in New Guinea are also re-evaluated. Six subspecies ofCentropus phasianinusare recognised: two from Australia(phasianinusin the south-east andmelanurusin the north), three from New Guinea (propinquusin the north, nigricansin the southeast andthierfelderiin the south), and one from Timor (muisubsp. nov.—Mason&McKean). These subspecies are diagnosed by size of wing, tail and bill and plumage colour. In eastern Australia there is an abrupt change in length of wing and tail within the region of the Burdekin Valley, indicating past geographical isolation and secondary contact. New Guinea populations appear to continue the clinal trends in size of south-eastern Australian birds but interposed between them is the larger form across northern Australia. A preliminary outline on relationships ofCentropuswithin the Australo-Papuan region is discussed, based on what is known about their external morphology and ecology. It is suggested thatC. phasianinusentered Australia from New Guinea and entered Timor from Australia.

摘要:
SUMMARYCANNON, C.E. 1984. The diet of lorikeetsTrichoglossusspp in the Queensland-New South Wales border region. Emu 84: 16–22.Whilst Scaly-breasted LorikeetsTrichoglossus chlorolepidotusfed almost exclusively on the flowers of 25 species of trees and shrubs in the Queensland-New South Wales border region, the Rainbow LorikeetT. haematodusfed on flowers as well as on fruits and leaf buds of 43 species. The greater variety of species in the diet of the Rainbow Lorikeet may have due to this species being sighted more regularly in well planted suburban areas which often have a high plant diversity. The Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, in contrast, was more frequently seen in open agricultural areas. Species ofBanksia, Callistemon, Melaleuca, Tristaniaand particularlyEucalyptuswere important food sources for both species. There was seasonal variation in the diet of each lorikeet, but only a few species were important at any particular time. Comparisons are made, where appropriate, between lorikeets and other flower-feeding birds, such as honeyeaters.

摘要:
SUMMARYSTOKES, T., W. SHEILS and K. DUNN 1984. Birds of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean. Emu 84: 23–28.The birds of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Indian Ocean, were surveyed by T.S. and W.S. in January 1982 and other records by W.S. and K.D. are included. Thirty-four species are recorded, of which nine are new records for the islands. Three species, introduced between 1885–1906 and recorded in 1940–41 or 1958, are believed to be extinct. Very few land or sea birds remain on the main atoll and the large rookery of seabirds on North Keeling Island is threatened by a recent increase in the number of birds killed. The endemic subspecies of the Buff-banded RailRallus philippensis andraosiwhich is common on North Keeling Island but rare on the main atoll, appears to be endangered.
