AbstractThe oscillator strengths of the main transition from the 3d4s4p‐states to the groundstate 3d4s2of Sc I are calculated on using wave functions derived by diagnolization of the interaction matrix elements of the 3d4s4p‐, 3d24p‐ and 4s24p‐configurations. The relevant dipole matrix elements are reduced by application of tensor algebra to the unknown one‐electron matrix elements 〈4s‖r‖4p>and<3d‖r‖4p〉. These radial integrals are calculated from experimental lifetimes and oscillator strengths as well as from theoretical models. The resulting absolute oscillator strengths show a fairly good agreement with the experimental data, the uncertainties being smaller than 10 percent for the
