摘要:
Geographic modeling systems should support simulation of mobile individuals in dynamic landscapes. In modeling a small population (e.g. an endangered species), it is important to keep track of individuals over time and space, interactions between individuals, landscape processes over time and space, interactions among landscape processes, and interactions of individuals with landscape processes. An object-oriented simulation modeling system was designed to meet these requirements. A prototype demonstrates the capabilities with hypothetical animals in static and dynamic landscapes.

摘要:
The Voronoi diagram has been suggested as an appropriate model for the description of relations between spatial objects (Gold 1992) and it is the only possible solution (which is currently available) to dynamic (measurement-based) GIS (Wright and Goodchild 1997). A Voronoi diagram can be computed either in vector mode or in raster mode. Most existing methods are vector-based. However, vector-based methods are complex for line sets and area sets. To overcome this serious deficiency, attempts have also been made to use rasterbased methods. This paper describes a raster-based method for computing Voronoi diagrams of spatial objects (including points, line and areas) using dynamic distance transformation achieved by the dilation operator in mathematical morphology. Furthermore, an extension is presented to accommodate complex spatial objects.

摘要:
Environmental economists usually pay little attention to inherently spatial aspects of much of their work. Such analyses also tend to suffer from considerable inefficiencies in data handling. This paper demonstrates how use of GIS and appreciation of the nature of spatial datasets can greatly facilitate natural resource valuation using the technique of travel cost analysis. This work forms the basis for tackling an important research topic in environmental economics: the feasibility of transferring benefits between studies. Using GIS allowed us to implement such transfer with greater ease, consistency, and recognition of the spatial aspects of study design and variable handling than is normally seen in such research.

摘要:
In comparison to studies in hydrology, progress in developing Geographical Information Systems (GISs) for catchment-based research in fluvial geomorphology appears to be slow due to problems relating to the digital representation of the channel perimeter, the non-incremental basis of river channel change and the extended timescales over which geomorphological change occurs. Acknowledging these constraints, critical system and parameter requirements are defined from which a GIS is implemented combining Laser-Scan mapping capabilities and macros with 'C' programs and ARC/INFO routines. Accurate data representation of linear and areal features is critical for deriving terrain and flow properties and an 'error' checking method for calculating upstream catchment areas is described. In general, system requirements are met with minimum data compromise but at cost to the system complexity and 'user-friendliness'. The potential for obtaining novel insights exists but requires careful attention to data quality standards.

摘要:
GIS managers traditionally consider three perspectives of the nature of GIS when introducing GIS into an organization. When the GIS is developed to address focused and well defined problems of the organization, these perspectives adequately describe the changing identities of GIS in the study of its diffusion. However when the GIS is developed to address strategic, but vaguely defined problems, as typically is the case of a corporate GIS, these perspectives are inadequate for describing it. Therefore a new perspective is developed for the corporate GIS and the significance of the new perspective on GIS diffusion research is discussed.
