Abstract Skin disease associated with the cutaneous commensal organisms Staphylococcus intermedius, Malassezia pachydermatis and Demodex canis is frequently encountered in veterinary medicine. In treatment the aim is elimination of the commensal, but recurrence of skin disease is not unusual. In this review, these potentially pathogenic commensals and their ecology are discussed with particular reference to skin biology and the surface ecosystem. The strategies employed by the micro‐organisms for survival and the defence mechanisms of the host are considered. Disease occurs when the virulence of the commensal overwhelms the resistance of the host. It is hoped that an understanding of the complex nature of the skin and its commensals will lead to a better understanding of those diseases associated with commensals and in consequence more effective treatment.Résumé—Les dermatoses associées aux organismes commensaux cutanés Staphylococcus intermedius, Malassezia pachydermatis et Demodex canis sont fréquentes en médecine vétérinaire.
Abstract Aspects of colonization of the canine skin with bacteria are reviewed. Owing to variability in sampling techniques, anatomical sites involved and lack of temporal studies, there is still controversy as to which bacteria are residents or transients on the canine skin. The establishment of the cutaneous flora is determined by the ability of bacteria to adhere to canine corneocytes, to use available nutrients from skin secretions and to resist challenge from competing bacteria. Variations in humidity and temperature due to environment, skin folds or differences in the haircoat are also likely to have an effect. Much research has focused around Staphylococcus intermedius, the main pathogen of the canine skin but its cutaneous residency status remains questionable. Pathological conditions such as atopy and seborrhoea favour the colonization of S. intermedius and predispose to infection. [Saijonmaa‐Koulumies, L.&Lloyd, D. H. Colonization of the canine skin with bacteria (Colonizacion de la piel cannina con bacterias). [Saijonmaa‐Koulumies, L., Lloyd, D.H.
Abstract The efficacy of a topical antimicrobial‐corticosteroid combination for the treatment of pyotraumatic dermatitis in dogs, was investigated. An open‐ended, double‐blind, randomized trial design was used. Forty dogs were divided into two vehicle‐treated control groups and three treatment groups. The dogs in the respective treatment groups were treated with emulsions of either neomycin, prednisolone or a neomycin‐prednisolone combination. Lesions were shaved and cleaned before treatment commenced, whereafter the allocated emulsion was applied twice daily for 7 days. Lesions were evaluated for surface area and degree of pruritus and inflammation. Skin biopsy specimens for bacterial culture and histopathological examination were taken. Staphylococcus aureus was the predominant organism isolated. The antimicrobial‐corticosteroid combination emulsion resulted in the quickest recovery, followed by the antimicrobial drug alone. Prednisolone alone gave significantly poorer results. [Schroeder, H., Swan, G.E., Berry, W.L., Pearson, J. 摘要:
Abstract Disc sensitivity tests were carried out on 2296 isolates of non‐pigmented, coagulase‐positive staphylococcal isolates from dogs in referral practice over the period 1980–96. Ninety‐eight isolates were from the ears, 1089 from other skin regions and 37 from mucosae. Resistance to penicillin increased from 69.0 to 89.3%. Oxytetracycline resistance remained at about 40%; resistance to erythromycin and lincomycin, and to co‐trimoxazole peaked at about 20 and 15%, respectively, in 1987–89 but has since fallen. Only a single isolate resistant to cephalexin was found between 1986 and 1996. No resistance to co‐amoxyclav, oxacillin, methicillin and enrofloxacin was demonstrated. Resistance of mucosal isolates was higher than those from skin. Multiple isolates from 90 dogs showed different resistance spectra in 56% of cases indicating that single swab samples are of limited value in determining optimal therapeutic antibiotics.
Abstract Twenty‐five pure‐bred and two cross‐bred German Shepherd dogs with German Shepherd dog pyoderma (GSP) were treated with enrofloxacin as an antimicrobial therapy. Following 28 weeks of treatment at a dose rate of 5 mg kg‐1, administered orally once daily, excellent results were obtained in 23 dogs (85.2%), and fair results in three dogs (11.1%). One dog (3.7%) showed no response. These findings indicate that enrofloxacin therapy is an effective antimicrobial treatment for the bacterial infection in GSP.Resumé 25 Bergers Allemandes de pure race et 2 métis suffrant d'infection bactérienne de type pyodermite du Berger Allemand fürent traités à l'aide d'enrofloxacine comme antimicrobien.
