Abstract—Humoral antibody responses to experimentalSarcoptes scabiei var. vulpesinfection in 10 beagle dogs were demonstrated by an ELISA in three experiments. In the first experiment, four dogs, infected with a relatively high dose ofS. scabiei, seroconverted 2 weeks post infection. All four animals showed clinical signs of sarcoptic mange. In the second experiment, six dogs were infected with a relatively low dose ofS. scabiei.Three of the dogs developed clinical signs of sarcoptic mange and only in these three were antibodies toS. scabieidemonstrated. Seroconversion occurred 4–5 weeks post infection. The six dogs infected with a low dose ofSarcopteswere re‐infected with a relatively low dose of mites 7 weeks after the spontaneous clinical recovery of the three dogs that had exhibited mange following the primary infection. The later three dogs showed a specific antibody response within 1 week and the other three dogs within 2 weeks following the re‐infection.Resumen En tres experimentos se demostraron las respuestas humorales de anticuerpos a la infección conSarcoptes scabiei var. vulpesen 10 perros de la raza Beagle por medio de pruebas ELISA. En el primer experimento cuatro de los perros infectados con una dosis relativamente alta deSarcoptes, seroconvirtieron 2 semanas despues de la infección. Estos cuatro animales mostraban cuadro clínico de infección. En un segundo experimento seis de los perros se sometieron a una dosis relativamente baja del ácaro. Solo tres de estos perros demostraron cuadro clínico de la infección, y en éstos animales exclusivamente se encontraron anticuerpos deS. scabiei.Cinco o seis semanas después de la infección se produjo la seroconversión de los mismos. Abstract—The results ofin vitroandin vivotests for 36 cats with signs suggestive of allergic skin disease were compared. The cats were presented to the dermatology section of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Bristol, with a variety of skin conditions. Intradermal skin testing with flea extract alone (six cats) or combined with a panel of 40 inhalant altergens (30 cats) was employed. Serum samples were tested with a commercial IgE ELISA against flea extract and 36 inhalant allergens. A diagnosis of flea bite hypersensitivity was made in 18 cats, atopic disease in nine cats and food hypersensitivity in one cat. Intradermal skin testing gave a positive predictive value in over 85 per cent of flea allergic cases and 100 per cent of atopic cases; the IgE ELISA test demonstrated relatively low predictive values for flea allergy and atopic disease and was not considered to be a useful diagnostic test.Résumé—Les résultats de testsin vitroetin vivofaits chez 36 chats ayant des symptômes évocateurs d'une dermite allergique ont été comparés. Des tests cutanés à la seule puce (six chats) ou combinés avec un panel de pneumallergènes (30 chats) ont été utilisés. Les sérums ont été testés avec un kit commercial de dosages d'IgE spécifiques de la puce et de 36 pneumallergènes par technique EIA. Un diagnostic de dermite par hyperseensibilité aux piqùres de puce a été fait chez 18 chats, une atopie chez neuf et une hypersensibilité d'origine alimentaire chez un. Les tests cutanés avaient une valeur prédictive de 85% pour les allergies à la puce et 100% pour les cas d'atopie; les tests IgE EIA avaient une valeur prédictive assez faible et n'ont pas été considérés comme étant un test utilisable en diagnostic.Resumen En este artículo se comparan los resultados de pruebasin vivoein vitroefectuadas en 36 gatos con cuadro clínico indicativo de alergias cutáneas. Éstos animales fueron presentados en la sección de Dermatología del departamento de medicina de la Universidad de Bristol con una variedad de condiciones cutäneas. En las pruebas de invecciones intradérmicas se utilizaron alergenos de extracto de pulga solos o combinados con un panel de 40 alergenos inhalatorios (30 gatos). También se llevaron a cabo pruebas de suero con el test comercial de IgE ELISA para el extracho de pulga y 36 de los alergenos inhalatorios. En 18 de los gatos se diagnostico hipersensitividad a las pulgas, en nueve atopía y solo uno hipersensitividad a los alimentos. Las pruebas intradérmicas produjeron una predictividad positiva en 85% de los casos de alergia a las pulgas y 100% de los casos de atopía. Abstract—Giant cell dermatosisis is reported in six cats with evidence of concurrent feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infection. Scaling, crusting and alopecia, accompanied by pruritus, affected the head and/or face predominantly in most cats; generalized skin disease developed in one cat. Histologically, giant keratinocytes resembling syncytial cells were found in the epidermis and superficial hair follicles, and were accompanied by dyskeratosis, pustules and ulcers. Immunohistochemical staining revealed FeLV antigen in the giant cells and adjacent keratinocytes. FeLV infection may have led to neoplastic alteration of the keratinocytes through recombination with host oncogenesResumen Este artículo se basa en seis gatos con dermatosis de las células gigantes infectados con el virus FeLV. Éstos animales presentaban escamas y costras, así como pérdida de pelo y picor en las regiones de la cabera y cara, predominantemente. Tan solo uno de los gatos desarrolló una dermatosis generalizada. En el exámen histológico se demostró la presencia de keratinocitos gigantes con semejonza a las células sinticiales localizados en la epidermis y folículos pilosos superficiales, acompañados de disqueratosis, pústulas y ülceras. Las finturas histo‐inmunológicas demostraron el antígeno FeLV en las células gigantes y keratinocitos adyacentes. Abstract—Clinical signs and antibody responses were observed in juvenile SPF‐pigs experimentally infected withSarcoptes scabiei var. suisand in neonatal pigs born to a sow cronically infected withS. scabiei.Mange became evident after 2–3 weeks. Three SPF‐pigs, which were infected twice, developed clinical signs a few days earlier than three other SPF‐pigs infected once. Serum antibodies toS. scabieiwere demonstrated by an ELISA, using an extract ofS. scabiei var. vulpesas an antigen, 5–7 weeks after the experimental infection and significant levels of antibody toS. scabieiwere seen during the acute and chronic phases of the disease. Pruritus was seen at 4 days of age in piglets born to the infected sow. Maternal antibodies toS. scabieiwere demonstrated within 6 h reaching mean maximum levels between 24 and 48 h after birth.Résumé—Les symptômes et la réponse anticorps chez des pores SPF infestés expérimentalement parSarcoptes scabiei var. suiset des porcelets nouveaux nés dans une porcherie infectée chroniquement parSarcoptes scabieione étéétudiés. Abstract—The clinical and histologic features of a 2‐year‐old intact male golden retriever with nodular dermatofibrosis and renal cystadenomas are described. The skin lesions failed to respond to antibiotic and glucocorticoid therapy. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a wedge‐shaped area of hyperechoic mottled echogenicity at the cranial pole of the left kidney and a small right kidney. Euthanasia was performed thirty‐six months following initial presentation, owing to progressive enlargement of the dermal and subcutaneous nodules and gross deformity of the left hind limb secondary to fibrous tissue deposition and lymphatic obstruction. Necropsy confirmed the presence of bilateral renal cystic hyperplasia and multifocal renal cystadenomas.
