摘要:
Science communication between stakeholders in rural industry research has become a matter of concern for funding agencies. This has resulted in new initiatives to promote greater ownership of the research by all parties. This article considers some important characteristics of science communication in theory, and then goes on to assess what is happening in practice from the perspective of the rural industry research and development corporations (RDCs). Particular attention is given to the role of scientists, communication managers, and RDCs in the communication of research science.

摘要:
Developing solutions to current environmental crises depends on understanding through the historical record how the planet attained its current state. Since first European settlement in 1788 parts of the Sydney estuary (Port Jackson. Middle Harbour, Lane Cove River and the Parramatta River) have been substantially modified by dredging and foreshore reclamation, activities with significant environmental implications. Dredging in particular took place over a period of more than 140 years, removing as much as 100M tonnes of material from the estuary and redistributing it in reclamation sites or offshore. Investigation of the history of dredging in the estuary reveals major gaps in the records, with even basic information on gross annual expenditure and quantities not available through periods of major dredging works.

摘要:
This article examines the way in which energy and greenhouse issues were considered in 68 environmental impact statements (EISs) prepared between 1974 and 1997 for 29 coal mining projects in the Hunter Valley of NSW. The coal industry and associated electricity generation produce about half of Australian production of greenhouse gases and much larger greenhouse emissions result from coal exported to other countries. The EISs indicate that the combined greenhouse emissions from all 29 operating and proposed mines in the Hunter Valley could represent between 1.0 per cent and 1.5 per cent of annual global carbon emissions due to world wide use of fossil fuels.

摘要:
Many countries in the South Pacific face critical problems with regard to waste management. Common problems include: insufficient government priority and political support for action; lack of finance; no long-term planning or business planning; poor landfill siting, design, planning and management; lack of skilled personnel; lack of awareness of the problems caused by poor waste management; physical limitations to the establishment of landfill sites; poor handling of clinical waste; insufficient recycling and reuse, including limited reuse of organic wastes, septic sludge, sewage sludge and effluent. Failure to adequately address these problems is leading to escalating environmental and health problems for Pacific Islanders, and serious consequences for economic development based on tourism, export agriculture and small ‘clean’ industries.
