AbstractForty‐five patients with non‐insulin‐dependent diabetes which was poorly controlled on oral hypoglycaemic agents were studied before and six months after transfer to insulin. Diabetic control had significantly improved at six months in 38 patients (84%). Mean (SD) glycosylated haemoglobin concentration fell from 13.7 (2.7)% to 11.3 (2.6)% (p<0.001) and blood glucose concentration from 18.7 (5.4) to 11.4 (5.6) mmol/l (p<0.001). Improvement in control was associated with a significant increase in ideal body weight from 113 (20.0)% to 119 (19.4)% (p120% ideal body weight and insulin dose for these was not significantly different from the remaining patients. Patients who had symptoms of hyperglycaemia and other medical problems did not respond as well as patients with symptomatic hyperglycaemia
