AbstractBecause a blend of limited miscibility level produces high damping characteristics in a composite, copolyurethanes of different molecular structure were synthesized to achieve a desired level of miscibility in PVC. A study of the viscoelastic properties of blends of a 50‐to‐50 weight ratio of polyurethanes and PVC showed a steady decrease in miscibility on replacement of polyurethanes synthesized from polycaprolactone diols with a molecular weight of 2000, with polyurethanes synthesized by poly(ethylene oxide) diols, up to 80 mol percent, whereupon the polyurethanes became immiscible. The temperature range of damping for a particular polyurethane could be controlled by adjusting the ratio of PVC to the polyurethane. AbstractA comparison has been made of the effect of ultraviolet and solar radiation on plasticised and unplasticised PVC. It has been shown that, when the polymer, plasticised with either a phthalate or trimellitate ester, is exposed to short‐wavelength ultraviolet radiation (<292 nm), the photodehydrochlorination of the polymer is retarded by the plasticiser. It has also been shown that, when longer‐wavelength radiation is used, the dehydrochlorination is accelerated by the plasticiser. In each case, the effect of the trimellitate is greater than that of the phthalate. AbstractConductive‐plastic enclosures, to compete successfully in the electronics industry, must be easily and rapidly moldable into a low‐cost, lightweight, structurally sound, flame‐retardant, and electrically‐conductive rigid part. Such a material must combine the design flexibility and moldability of a plastic with the EMI shielding properties approaching those of a metal. AbstractPVC‐based plastics have a good record for injection‐molding processability, early deficiencies having been corrected with additives. Because metallic flakes have unusual aspect ratios compared with conventional fillers, it has been necessary to determine the general effects of flake on injection molding. Specific objectives of the investigation were to verify processing latitude, set guidelines for optimum processing, determine the effects of processing on physical and electrical properties, and look for unusual effects due to filler configuration.
