摘要:
AbstractOrganotin compounds have long been known in the PVC industry for their excellent performance properties in almost every application. Over the past several years, a wide variety of health and environmental studies have been conducted which demonstrate the safe use of these performance chemicals as PVC heat stabilizers. This paper introduces the “risk equation” and then applies this equation to the foreseeable exposure risks involved with the use of organotin stabilizers during PVC processing. Further, migration of organotin species from PVC end‐use articles is discussed with comparison to established long‐term no‐effect levels for these chemicals. The environmental fate of organotin compounds and their effects on some species of microorganisms is also addressed. The risk equation is used to fully evaluate all potential hazards to provide a fully informed risk assessment for the use of organotin stabilize

摘要:
AbstractThe final step in the purification of PVC bottles for recycling is melt filtration. However, this common practice increases in complexity when dealing with a clear, thermally sensitive material such as PVC. This paper will explore both conventional and new techniques for melt filtration. This paper also describes various types of contamination found in the form of other polymers and foreign material, as well as experimental data on acceptable levels and processing conditions to purge them from the vinyl melt stream.

摘要:
AbstractThe separation of PVC from contaminants is one of the most important steps in recycling PVC. Earlier works have shown that one can separate PVC from other polymers by using the X‐ray fluorescence technique. However, in many cases, even after careful separation, there is a remaining impurity level of about 0.1% due to the limitations of the separation processes. In many applications, impurities, particularly nonmeltables, cause defects in the PVC matrix and must be removed for best performance and appearance. Melt filtration appears to be the best technique to remove the nonmeltable impuritie

摘要:
AbstractPlastisol rheological characteristics are of prime importance to the formulator and processor. As the formulas become more complicated, interactions can occur between ingredients that have significant effects on rheology. This paper explores aspects of the resin‐CaCO3filler interaction. Experiments investigating some of the effects of resin‐filler interaction on rheological behavior have been performed. The experiments indicate that particle size distributions of the resin and filler, as they relate to packing efficiency, have a significant effect on rheological behavior, especially at high filler concentrations. The effects of particle packing vs. oil absorption are also investigated and discus

摘要:
AbstractAbrasion due to the high speed mixing of rigid PVC dry blends filled with CaCO3was found to be a function of both the mixing conditions and type and level of CaCO3used. Laboratory scale tests showed that abrasion is a function of mix time, mix speed, and mixer blade geometry. These variables were standardized to develop a laboratory abrasion test using a Hockmeyer mixer equipped with a soft 3‐in diameter aluminum mixing blade. This procedure was used to investigate the effect of CaCO3property variables on abrasion during rigid PVC dry blending. Multiple linear regression analysis at 30 phr CaCO3showed that abrasion increased with filler top cut, mean, acid insolubles, and MgCO3content, but diminished with an increase in percent less than 1 micron fraction. A more generalized abrasion predictor model was developed by considering surface area to be a linear function of top cut, mean, and percent less than 1 micron properties. Abrasion was greatly minimized by using finer particle size, higher surface area CaCO3with low acid insoluble and magnesium carbonate levels. These criteria also aid in reducing the abrasive effects of TiO2during dry blending through a CaCO3/TiO2interactio

摘要:
AbstractA DSC method for assessing degree of fusion of rigid PVC compounds has been improved, so as to make the technique more precise and objective. Analysis of conventional pipe samples provides assessments of gelation level that accord with solvent resistance and practical experience. However, thermal analysis techniques prove to be unreliable for compounds that contain no filler or more than about 13% filler. At least about 1% filler appears to be necessary for the phenomena that are the basis of this technique. Filler may affect crystallization of PVC compounds.

摘要:
AbstractThis paper describes various SPC methods that can be used to promote quality improvement, resulting in increased productivity and lower costs. By concentrating on preventative systems rather than detective systems, the operation has increased productivity by 5.0% over a period of two years with relatively little capital investment. This has resulted in an additional capacity of 650,000 kg per year.

摘要:
AbstractWe describe examples in which we have demonstrated the feasibility of collection, separation, cleaning, and manufacture of several recycled products. We show that vinyl in municipal solid waste can be recycled into bottles, drainage pipe, and drainage pipe fittings with good appearance and properties. We also demonstrate the feasibility that vinyl wire and cable can be recycled into a variety of applications, including wire and cable traffic cones and drainage pipe with good appearance and properties.
