摘要:
AbstractMoisture can be absorbed from the air by PVC plastisols and by the fused product. Water in plastisols can contribute to defects in films, sheet goods and foam products, usually in the form of depressions or craters. Water absorbed by thermoformable foam PVC sheets can result in defects in the molded product, often appearing as wrinkles. Correlation between the sum of the water absorbed by individual PVC plastisol components and the water absorbed by a fused thermoformable foam sheet suggests that moisture sensitivity of the product can be minimized by selecting plasticizers and PVC resins having low moisture absorption.

摘要:
AbstractAn experimental investigation was undertaken on the thermoplastic elastomer and subambient behaviors of flexible PVC. From cyclic mechanical testing, it was determined that adequate TPE performance can be obtained, especially at low frequencies. Combined with rheology data, a model consistent with crystallite tie points was reaffirmed. The subambient impact toughness was found to be a sigmoidal function of temperature. Very encouraging agreements were obtained between impact toughness and prediction on dissipations based on dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA).

摘要:
AbstractThe use of a new low smoke, heat distortion temperature modifier for rigid PVC and chlorinated PVC is discussed. This material, CN‐1427, is a tetrabromobisphenol A carbonate oligomer which is compatible with vinyl compositions. The carbonate oligomer can be compounded into PVC resin to improve heat distortion temperature of PVC and CPVC by 20–30°C. Unlike conventional HDT modifiers, brominated carbonate oligomers do not increase smoke evolution during flammability testing. Thus, using carbonate oligomer technology, it is possible to achieve low smoke, Class I (ASTM E‐84) and V‐O flammability (UL‐94) performance. Vinyl compositions, modified with the carbonate oligomer described in this work, can be utilized as an alternative to expensive engineering thermoplastics. This paper reports recent studies on the use of carbonate oligomers as heat distortion temperature modifiers for low smoke vinyl applications. Formulation information addressing flammability and physical property performance is presented

摘要:
AbstractSix di‐nonyl phthalates varying in degree of branching are evaluated in both suspension and low soap plastisol resin formulations. Comparative plasticizer performance properties of these systems are studied in terms of plasticizer structural differences and their affects on processing parameters and physical properties of suspension resin and low soap dispersion resin formulation

摘要:
AbstractImpact modifiers are used to enhance the toughness of rigid vinyl by providing a dispersed rubbery phase to absorb impact energy and prevent fracture of the otherwise brittle matrix. MBS impact modifiers are complex core//shell polymer structures based on specially prepared butadiene/styrene rubber latices with multiple stages of acrylic and other polymers grafted to them. In addition to providing a rubbery dispersed phase to improve to improve the toughness of vinyl, these structures also maintain clarity by matching the refractive index of the rubber particles with that of the vinyl matrix. Data will be present showing the effect of the rubber morphology, particle size and refractive index on the balance of impact strength and clarity of MBS modified vinyl packaging formulations.

摘要:
AbstractPermanent discolorations of sheet flooring, and other appearance surfaces made from flexible PVC, are commonly called stains. Resistance to stains is imparted to such surfaces through a four part mechanism which relates directly to plasticizer composition. Benzoate esters of 2,2,4‐trimethyl‐1, 3‐pentanediol have traditionally been used as stain resistant plasticizers, but are available commercially only as complex mixtures with reaction by‐products. New products, which are high purity and chemically similar, are shown to have performance attributes. Stain resistance and volatility are improved by the use of high purity derv

摘要:
AbstractThe compatibility of suspension poly(vinylchloride) [PVC] with twelve different plasticizers was determined using calculated compatibility predictors, as well as actual measurements of compatibility. Solubility parameters were capable of classifying plasticizers of a given family in terms of their compatibility with PVC, but were not useful for comparing plasticizers from different families. A polarity parameter, the product of the molar mass of the plasticizer and its polarity ratio, was found to be a useful predictor of activity for monomeric plasticizers.

摘要:
AbstractTraditionally, PVC compounds are identified by reference to bulk properties such as hardness, specific gravity, tensile, elongation. While these are useful and descriptive notations, they do not serve effectively to define compound quality. Melt flow is broadly used to great advantage in testing most commerical thermo‐plastics as described in ASTM D‐1238. These procedures utilize the dual advantages that a plastometer is a very expedient instrument to use in a given processing facility, and that a MF test is highly sensitive, capable of detecting relatively small differences in polymer structure and composition. However, PVC's are not considered within D‐1238 for several important reasons. The thermal and rheological instabilities of PVC create special considerations in testing as well as in processing. Furthermore, the polymer is always used in a highly varied compounding‐ingredient‐environment which further complicates th

摘要:
AbstractThis paper will discuss recently developed technology that demonstrates the effectiveness of a thermoplastic polyvinyl chloride/nitrile rubber alloy versus commercially available thermoplastic elastomers and conventionally cured rubbers. Compounding variations, mixing and processing of thermoplastic elastomers such as low temperature properties, compression set, heat resistance, flex properties, and oil and fuel resistance will be examined. Compounding variations of the PVC/NBR allows will be explored to show how recipe changes can affect these important properties.
