摘要:
This paper explores the limits of decision support systems (DSS) using a case study of fashion purchasing to elicit the range of needs for which support might be required. In particular, it highlights the extent to which issues such as vision, creativity and future thinking are management problems for which systems would be useful. The paper looks at the attributes of vision and relates components of a vision—based decision to the development and use of DSS. Vision is defined, and its constituents, foresight, culture, change and strategic intent, discussed. The needs of senior decision makers and the drawbacks of DSS in supporting vision—based decisions are analysed. Management techniques suitable as model bases for such DSS are briefly examined. Some are useful for assessing the impact and importance of future developments, yet, currently available development techniques are more suitable for planning than for supporting of vision—based decisions. An example taken from the fashion industry illustrates the shortcomings of a new, so-called, DSS, already considered indispensable for fashion purchasers and sales managers, with regard to vision support. Finally, a new tool, or hybrid, vision support systems, VSS, is suggested.

摘要:
In this paper we analyse the empirical findings on the impact of mediated group memory (guided information retrieval) on collaborative small group decision-making. In a first approach, we implemented a group decision support system which consists of communication software, decision support software (the Analytic Hierarchy Process method), document exchanging facilities, but most important allowing groups of people to travel together as a team through the Internet. This virtual team is guided by a “knowledge mediator” who determines through the phases of the decision—making process the analogous sources of information. In a first series of experiments, we examine the effects this structure has on small groups of decision makers carrying out tasks with varying complexity and with a need for “rich” multimedia information exchange. The main factors that were taken into account are the time spent to reach the decision, the number of alternative scenarios considered by the group, but also the particular effects on the group decision processes imposed by the presence of a mediator, who controls the different sources of information.

摘要:
This paper presents a decision support system whose modules are geographically distributed and interfaced both amongst each other and with users via the World Wide Web. The data management sub—system consists in an Oracle database, resident on a host at the Joint Research Centre, while the model management sub—system consists in a set of optimisation routines installed at the University of Bologna. Its access, restricted by a project—dependent security policy, is potentially available to any HTTP client. The support to unconstrained data maintenance and access required the development of new HTML/Oracle gateways.

摘要:
Electronic Meetings Systems (EMS) have proved effective for supporting group decision—making processes where the participants have a good domain knowledge of the context. Cognitive maps, again, have proved effective for problem finding, where the participants are structuring a more or less unknown reality, or when defining the problem in itself is problematic. Cognitive maps are instrumental for grasping the value and belief system of the decision-maker(s). They contribute to displaying the subjective perceptions of a contextual reality of decision-makers. This paper reports on a exploratory study where the suitability of an EMS—Group Systems—and a cognitive mapping software—Graphics COPE—have been used to assist participants to construct a reality. The participants obtained facts, but most of their understanding of the reality was based on their values and beliefs, which tended to have a science fictional character.

摘要:
In this paper, we will demonstrate the power of a spreadsheet programme as a prototyping environment for customised DSSs. Abilities of a spreadsheet programme for both visualisation and optimisation will be made clear through the study of the Power Agents System. Power Agents System involves digital pictures and complex graphs. Both of which can be included and modified in the application by the use of the default features of a spreadsheet programme. The capacity of using multiple worksheets in one workbook of a spreadsheet programme will be especially useful in the construction of different user screens containing applications.
