SummaryClaims of impressive outcome figures for the Minnesota Model find some support in published studies, with as many as two thirds of admissions apparently achieving a genuinely good outcome at 1‐year follow‐up. However, methodological criticisms of these studies indicate the need for further research incorporating control or comparison treatment groups, longer follow‐up, more rigorous assessment procedures, and clearly defined diagnostic/outcome criteria. The powerful ideology of the programme provokes criticism but is apparently central to its success. It incorporates a number of therapeutic elements known or suspected to be of value in the management of drug/alcohol dependence. While some clients or patients and professionals alike may react against this treatment model we all have much to learn from it, and many are undoubtedly helped

SummaryOut of 25 each of long‐term, heavy bhang (marihuana) ingestors, 25 charas (hashish) smokers and 25 matched non‐user controls earlier studied and reported by us, 11 bhang users, 19 charas smokers and 15 controls could be re‐studied after a lapse of 9‐10 years. All the users had continued the use during the intervening years. Tests of intelligence, memory and perceptuomotor tasks earlier administered to the subjects were repeated. This showed a significant additional deterioration in case of the users on a number of psychological measures, i.e. on digit span, speed and accuracy tests, reaction time and Bender visuomotor gestalt test. The deterioration in the cannabis users was significantly greater than in the case of the non‐users controls. SummaryTwo papers have appeared in the literature recently reporting the use of the Severity of Opiate Dependence Questionnaire (SODQ) with American and British samples of opiate addicts. This paper presents the findings of a third study. The SODQ was completed by a further 126 subjects attending the original New York Clinic and the results largely confirmed our earlier findings: first the four main sections of the SODQ each give a strong first factor and secondly when these are combined a strong overall factor emerges. These results are again at variance with those found in the British sample and possible reasons briefly discussed.

SummaryOf 331 admissions to the wards of a general hospital 4.8% were diagnosed alcoholic using the CAGE questionnaire with the usual cut‐off point of 2/3. Using a cut‐off point of 1/2 on the CAGE there were found to be significantly more cases of anxiety and depression among the male CAGE 2, 3 and 4 scores as a group than among the CAGE 0 and 1 scorers taken as a group. Those who admitted to early morning drinking were more likely to present as cases of anxiety and/or depression than those who did not. Lowering the CAGE cut‐off point to 1/2 would increase the diagnosed prevalence of alcoholism or problem drinking in this population to 9%. SummaryPatients in a therapeutic community were questioned about their gambling behavior in order to find out what percentage of them were pathological gamblers. The South Oaks Gambling Screen (the SOGS) was used to screen the clients for gambling‐related problems. Out of 100 residents tested, 14 were diagnosed as pathological gamblers and an additional 14 showed signs of problematic gambling. Seventeen percent listing alcohol as one their three favorite drugs, 18% listing cocaine, 13% preferring marihuana, 11% preferring hallucinogens, 29% choosing heroin, 10% choosing PCP, and none choosing tranquilizers or sedatives showed signs of pathological gambling. Males were more likely to be classified as pathological gamblers than females. Residents aged 19 years and over were four times as likely to show signs of pathological gambling than those 18years and under. SOGS was also significantly associated with parental gambling (50% of the children of pathological gamblers were pathological gamblers themselves) and occupational status.
