SummaryThe literature concerning alcohol and food abuse is reviewed. Previous researchers in their respective fields of alcoholism, anorexia nervosa and hyperphagia/obesity have often remarked on cross‐abuse commonalities. Such supposed commonalities are examined. Sociocultural and familial influences, personality, intemality vs externality, and the concepts of craving, abstinence and relapse are discussed. The Abstinence Violation Effect and catastrophe theory are outlined as models with comment on their applicability. Conclusions and suggestions for subsequent research are propose

SummaryThere is now emerging a long overdue recognition that preventive work in the area of drink‐related problems has its own special responsibilities and is not simply adjunctive to the treatment of individuals with identified drinking difficulties. Upholders of this position [10, 11, 13, 14] believe that preventive work should address clearly formulated concrete problems outside treatment and design specific strategies to deal with them. Although we agree that previous preventive schemes have been misconceived, we feel that an alternative movement should do more than submit an agenda of specific social problems to prevention workers. In this article we express some doubts we have about the prevention of drinking problems as an exclusively pragmatic undertaking and develop a more general theme based on the investigation of existing community responses to drinking problem

SummaryAn increase in excise duty on beer and other alcoholic beverages in March 1981 caused their price to increase faster than the retail price index and average disposable incomes. Unemployment was rising simultaneously. The influence of these economic changes on drinking habits was explored by comparing the survey responses of 463‘regular drinkers’in the Lothians in 1978/79 and 1981/82. Total alcohol consumption fell by 18 per cent between these two occasions, and associated adverse effects by 16 per cent. The influences of social class, income, and employment and marital status, and of changes in these, were examined. Although rising unemployment was responsible for up to 20 per cent of the reduction in consumption, and heavy drinkers appeared to be selectively at risk of losing their jobs, the increased price of alcohol was the major influence. Heavy drinkers and dependent drinkers both reduced their consumption at least as much as light or moderate drinkers and suffered fewer adverse effects as a result. SummaryThe results of a Principal Components analysis of the Relapse Precipitants Inventory administered to 256 hospitalized alcoholic patients are compared with a reanalysis of data obtained from a different sample 5 years ago. These results indicate that the factor structure of the Inventory is stable over time and with different populations of alcoholic patients. Information on all referral enquiries made to three short‐term residential units for problem drinkers in the Midlands over a 2 year period is presented. Of the 904 first time enquiries, 30 per cent reached the point of being admitted for assessment. The majority of enquiries withdrew over the early period of selection, the largest number dropping out between acceptance of an interview and actual attendance. The main referral source was the Probation Service accounting for 30 per cent of the total number of enquiries. Referral interest from other hostels, Alcoholism Treatment Units and Psychiatric hospitals were more likely to generate positive applications than enquiries from non‐specialist sources. On the basis of these findings and discussions with referral agencies it is suggested that the changes recommended by the DHSS in the Pattern and Range of Services for Problem Drinkers will do little to induce new types of problem drinker outside the client groups of primary agencies to seek help.
