A perspective of therapy is presented that re‐visions clients' pathology into desire for initiatory experience. Initiatory experience is understood as a symbolic template that lies over the biological and psychological developmental life cycle. A symbolic perspective is taken of clients' presenting problems in order to provide meaning to the symptoms and to eliminate the constraints that accompany diagnoses, treatments, or both. A developmental foundation is laid in support of the clinical application of this perspective in what will be called symbolic therapy. Anthropological and psychological models are reviewed in order to clarify the historical genesis and modern application of the ritual of initiation. This article explores the importance of rituals to a culture and more particularly the formation, development, and evolution of rituals in couples. The article also explores the ways in which values of the couple and counselor affect the development of new rituals and the reevaluation of existing rituals as a grounding mechanism for change.

Counseling and the helping arts in general have been hesitant to openly embrace the concept ofspiritualityas part of their working knowledge base. Part of the dilemma centers on sometimes confusing a religious view with a more secular conception of the term. Another potentially confounding element is the existing variety of ways the term is actually being used by both. In this investigation of the roots of the problem I hope to catalyze a more inviting and open dialogue as the profession considers the possibilities associated with an expansion or consolidation of definition(s).

The complexity of valuing is examined by assessing the process of valuing, beginning with a basic method: rank ordering. To understand this process, 64 participants were asked to record their comments as they took the Rokeach Value Survey (RVS). Examination of these comments reveals that many agendas seem to be operating, making valuing far more complex than the linear model of rank ordering values permits. Those who reflect on this task seem to find themselves engaged in something more complex. The participants' comments reveal systemic rather than only linear tensions among values.

The purpose of this study was to examine whether graduate students in counseling(n =95) have different worldviews than undergraduate students (n =177) who might be potential clients. Students in both groups completed the Scale to Assess World Views (Ibrahim&Kahn, 1987). Results indicated that undergraduate students' worldviews were significantly different from graduate counseling students'. In comparison, undergraduates were more likely than graduate counseling students to focus on the past, to perceive human nature as evil, human relationships as linear‐hierarchical and collateral‐mutual, and nature as powerful. Graduate counseling trainees, on average, were more likely than undergraduates to perceive human nature as good. Men were more likely than women to perceive human nature as evil, human relationships as linear‐hierarchical and individualistic, and nature as controllable. Women, in contrast, preferred the being‐in‐becoming modality. Implications and limited generalizability of these findings for counseling are

This study surveyed counselors' rates of involvement in counseling, explored whether counselors value seeing therapists of a similar theoretical orientation to their own, and examined which characteristics were important in choosing one's therapist. Of 2,000 randomly selected ACA members, with a 38% return rate, 80% were found to have attended counseling, with women seeking counseling at significantly higher rates than men. Having been in counseling varied as a function of division affiliation as well as counselor's theoretical orientation. Finally, this study also explored the characteristics deemed important in choosing one's counselor and the values counselors hold regarding involvement in their own therapy.

Howard's (1993) reconceptualization of free will and determinism is elaborated to distinguish between uncaused and unpredictable actions by drawing on principles derived from chaos theory. Findings from research on the career alternatives pursued by women are related to the distinctions proposed in these models. Further debate, elaboration, and empirical scrutiny of these ideas are encouraged.
