The level of soluble tissue phosphorus (PO4‐P) may be correlated with the plant P nutritional status, but the amount extracted depends upon dry matter losses or the amount of enzymatic or heat—induced hydrolysis of organic P compounds during sample drying.

Two single value methods of indexing P sorption were compared to parameters derived from P adsorption isotherms in a range of waterlogged and dry rice soils. These measures of P sorption capacity correlated closely with one another. However, they did not correlate equally with several other soil properties (pH, extractable Fe and Al). Because relationships between P sorption and soil properties proved to be method dependent, results from different methods must be compared with caution.

Phosphorus sorption studies were conducted on volcanic ash influenced surface horizons of 29 northern Idaho soils. Results show that the amount of P sorbed was significantly correlated with citrate‐dithionite extractable aluminum (r = .64**), but not with Fe. Other significantly correlated soil properties were: percent base saturation (r = ‐.73**), percent clay (r = .42**), and exchangeable acidity (r = .39*).

摘要:
Variations in the plant growth media were achieved by combining kaolinite clay (<lμm esd.), silt (2–50μm esd.) and sand (100–250μm esd.) in various ratios. Peds of different sizes were separated from an Okolona clay soil and used as a growth media. A layer (3 cm thickness) of the sand, silt or clay and their combinations were intercalated between sandy loam soil material in a lucite coated cardboard carton. After 21 days the plants were harvested and analyzed for a number of growth parameters and related to the physical and micromorphology of the central control layer.

The effects of increasing levels of NaCl in the irrigation water on the foliar content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn of six citrus seedling varieties were studied. The experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions in a factorial design. Treatments consisted of addition of irrigation waters containing 1.5, 10, 20, and 40 me NaCl/l. Increasing salinity significantly decreased K and Mn contents and increased those of N and Mg. Leaf content of P, Ca, and Fe was not affected. Results also showed that seedling variety and sampling data had a significant effect on the mineral composition of the leaf.

Soil pH's were evaluated at three time intervals following land clearing at two locations in the Matanuska Valley. Seasonal fluctuations of pH values over a seven‐year period as determined in water (pHw,) and 0.01 M CaCl2(pHs) were additionally evaluated at these locations. A statistical rise in soil pH occurred at both locations with clearing and subsequent cultivation. Soil reaction differences related to season and year were not consistent and were not related to a definite pattern. No relationship between monthly or seasonal precipitation and the soil reaction was found. The correlation coefficient between pHwand pHswas highly significant. Work of other investigators is discussed in the interpretation of the data collected.

Tests were conducted to determine the effects of leptophos, phorate, terbufos, and WL 24073 {0‐ [2‐chloro‐1‐(2,5‐dichloro‐phenyl) vinyl]0‐methylethylphosphonothioate} on microbial populations and activities in a sandy loam. A stimulatory effect on bacterial numbers was observed with some insecticide treatments in the early stages of incubation. WL 24073 increased the nitrification of the incorporated (NH4)2SO4‐N. Phorate stimulated soil microbial respiration.

Two cultivars of cotton (Gossypiumspp) were grown in solution culture in a glasshouse to determine phytotoxicity effects of excesses of Cr and Li. The 10‐4MCr2(SO4)3resulted in leaf yield reduction of 83% and in leaf, stem and root concentrations respectively of 22, 15, and 410μg Cr/g with the Acala SJ‐2 cv. With the Giza 68 cv. the same level of Cr resulted in leaf yield reduction of 88% and in 19, 47, and 450μg Cr/g for leaf, stem and roots respectively. The Cr resulted in many mineral interactions. The 10‐4MLi2SO4resulted in very little if any yield reductions in either cv. Plant Li concentrations were 40, 8, and 10 and 45, 10 and 5 for leaf, stem and root for Acala SJ‐2 and Giza 68 respectively. Both cultivars tolerated Li equally well.

Two cultivars of cotton (Gossypiumspp) were grown in Yolo loam soil in a glasshouse to determine phytotoxicity effects of Cr and Li and possible interactions with other metals. The Cr at 100μg/g soil had no adverse effects on either cultivar studied. A Cr increase was not observed in either stems or leaves. Both cultivars tolerated 25 and 50μg Li/g soil. The 50μg Li/g soil resulted in leaves of Acala SJ‐2 with 432μg Li/g leaves and 720 in Giza 45. The 100μg Li/g soil resulted in 74% and 87% leaf yield reductions in Acala SJ‐2 and Giza 45 respectively. Leaf concentrations of Li respectively were 1950 and 1850μg/g. Except at the highest level of Li, leaves had higher concentrations of Li than did roots. The Cr and Li resulted in some plant metal interactions.
