摘要:
Sulfate in various types of aqueous solutions such as soil‐water extracts, sewage effluents, irrigation water, and well water can be determined rapidly and accurately by a volumetric technique. The indirect method is based on the formation of the barium‐nitrochromeazo complex. Using a water‐acetone medium sharpens the end point and adding NH4F at low pH controls interferences.

摘要:
The iron status of soils and its relation to iron uptake and iron‐chlorosis is discussed. In many soils, the soluble iron level is so low that rather than having to screen against iron uptake, plants are likely limited in their iron uptake by diffusion. The relationship between the plant root‐soil‐iron environment and the plant's ability to alter this environment is related to the development of iron‐chlorosis.

摘要:
Simple steam distillation methods are described for determination of ammonium N and nitrate N in acid KMnO4solution used to absorb NH3, NO and NO2evolved from soils. They involve use of MgO for distillation of ammonia and of FeSO4, Ag2SO4, and MgO for reduction of nitrate to ammonia. The methods are rapid and precise, and they permit nitrogen‐15 analysis of NH3‐N and (NO + NO2)‐N evolved from soils.

Deficiency symptoms were produced on 11 different flowering annual plants grown in sand cultures containing Hoagland's complete and nutrient deficient solutions. Visual observations were recorded and leaf analyses run to establish standard and threshold levels of important macro‐and micro‐elements.

摘要:
Exposing soybean seedlings to wind or to wind plus sand at a windspeed of 13.4 m/sec for up to 40 minutes decreased nitrate reducíase activity and increased nitrate content immediately after exposure. Enzyme activity immediately after exposure was lower in damaged seedlings than in the untreated check, but after 24 hours the check had the lower activity. The enzyme activity and nitrate concentration remained higher in damaged seedlings than in the check for up to 40 days after exposure.

Concentration of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and B in the foliage ofVitis rotundifoliavaried widely between years and at different sampling dates within the year. Concentrations of N, P, and K in the foliage decreased sharply until late July each year. Calcium concentration in foliage increased as the season progressed each year while the concentration of B was similar for all dates in the same year. Variation for the concentration of Mg varied between years but no clear seasonal pattern was evident. Soil amendments of dolomitic lime or epsom salts increased the concentration of Mg in the foliage. Concentration of B in the foliage was less than normally reported for other grape species and was increased by application of B to the soil.

摘要:
An automated soil test for sulphur and interpretative criteria for Saskatchewan conditions are presented. Sulphate‐sulphur (SO4‐S) in 0.01 M CaCl2extracts of soil is determined by turbidimetric and nephelometric procedures operating simultaneously in an AutoAnalyzer system. A procedure for the segregation and elimination of samples containing excessive amounts of SO4‐S is described.

摘要:
A saraimplified procedure for the measurement of total mercury in soils and some preliminary results for Saskatchewan are presented. Soil samoles were digested in aqua regia at low temperatures, followed by determination of Hg with a simplified flameless atomic absorption technique. Hg levels in soils analyzed ranged from 0.003 to 0.071 ug/g.
