摘要:
In a three‐year container experiment with “Cox's Orange Pippin"/M 9 in sand culture, the influence of continuous and seasonally varied ammonium and nitrate nutrition on the mineral content of the fruits and on the incidence of bitter pit was investigated.

摘要:
During 3 consecutive years, occurrences of storage disorders of McIntosh apples (Malus domestica, Borkh.) increased with decreasing Ca concn in the outer cortical flesh at harvest. Time‐course studies showed that during maturation and storage of apples, Ca concn in the core region declined by about 50%. In the outer flesh, Ca concn declined during maturation, reached a minimum at or shortly following harvest, and then rose significantly during subsequent storage. Preharvest treatments increased Ca concentration in the outer flesh at harvest, and did not influence the rise in Ca following harvest.

摘要:
A general review is presented of the postulated roles of calcium in structure and function of tissue. Special emphasis is given to the role of calcium in membrane form and function and the involvement of calcium in metabolism, hormone action and as a cell wall constituent. The consequences of deficiency are discussed only when used as a basis to describe calcium function. Calcium as a mediator of membrane action in relation to discrimination and physical integrity under stress is a major topic.

摘要:
When calcium carbonate was added to an acid soil, it induced or alleviated a micronutrient stress, depending on the genotype and the soil. Calcium carbonate added to Richland soil (pH 5.2) corrected Mn‐toxicity symptoms in Bragg soybean (Glycine maxL.) Merr.) but induced B‐deficiency symptoms in Coker 71–5089 cotton (Gossypium hirsutumL.). The latter did not develop Mn‐toxicity symptoms. Absorption and transport of Ca may enhance P uptake and induce Fe‐deficiency symptoms on Fe‐inefficient genotypes. Cereals differ in their response to Cu stress and the degree to which Cu deficiency depresses the transport of Ca to top leaves affects the expression of the Cu‐deficiency symptoms (withertip). Manganese‐efficient oat genotypes took up more Ca than Mn‐inefficient oats. In contrast, Fe‐efficient oat genotypes took up less Ca than Fe‐inefficient oats. Calcium is universally important as a competing metal ion in chelation and transport of elements in plants and the differential uptake of Ca may affect use of these micronutrients.

摘要:
One of the most important roles of Ca in plants is that of protecting against toxicities of trace metals. Even though this is a function of Ca, at least some of the trace metals in excess do inhibit uptake and/or translocation of Ca. Managanese, when supplid at a very high level to bush beans (Phaseolus vulgarisL. cultivar Improved Tender‐green) in solution culture, decreased Ca concentration in leaves, stems, and roots. The inhibition was pronounced for 10(E‐3) and 10(E‐2)MMn. The decrease for the latter was 76% for leaves, 61% for stems, and 49% for roots. Molybdenum at 10(E‐3)Mdecreased bush bean leaf, stem, and root concentrations of Ca by 38%, 24%, and 16%, respectively. Vanadate at 10(E‐5) M decreased bush bean concentrations of Ca in leaves, stems, and roots by 37%, 50%, and 11%, respectively. Silver at 10(E‐5)Mdecreased Ca in leaves by 67%. Cadmium at 10(E‐4)Mdecreased leaf, stem, and root Ca by 76%, 28%, and 61%, respectively. Lithium at 50 ppm in soil decreased yields of bush beans by 75%, but had no effect on Ca in the shoots. In soil, 500 ppm Li decreased shoot yield of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cultivar Atlas 57) by 66% and Ca concentration by 72%. Nickel (2 X 10(E‐5)M) decreased Ca concentration in bush bean leaves by 45% at 10(E‐4)MCa, 42% at 10(E‐3)MCa, and 33% at 10(E‐2)MCa. In roots the reductions were 35%, 43%, and 44%, respectively. Decreased uptake of Ca caused by excess trace metals could increase their phytotoxicity.

摘要:
The chlorogenic acid contents of 7 lettuce cultivars were measured at six stages of growth. At maturity, the cultivars were assessed for incidence of tipburn. At all stages of growth, chlorogenic acid content differed significantly between some cultivars, but not between others. With increasing plant size chlorogenic acid concentration decreased and at all growth stages tested, it was positively correlated with the incidence of tipburn at maturity.

摘要:
Two groundnut cultivars, the small‐seeded and “pops”; slightly susceptible Natal Common (NC) and the medium‐seeded, pops susceptible Makulu Red (MR) were grown in two different soils and in nutrient solution in the green house during summertime in Germany. The objectives were to work out optimum growth conditions in order to define the role of Ca in seed development.
