摘要:
There is increasing interest, particularly among fertilizer company soil testing laboratories, to standardize soil testing laboratory procedures and methods of reporting and interpreting soil test results. A Task Force Committee on Soil Testing was formed in 1969 by the Fertilizer Institute to formulate standard methods of testing soils. In 1971, a new organization called “Council on Soil Testing and Plant Analysis”; will begin soliciting a membership. The Council's primary objective is “to promote uniform soil test and plant analysis methods, use, interpretation and terminology”; with both organizations working toward a common goal. Considerable progress should be made toward standardizing the soil testing and plant analysis techniques.

摘要:
Crop production, equivalent or exceeding any that has been attained or predicted, is possible from the sandy soils of peninsular Florida. However, extreme variability occurs from season to season, from field to field, and even within fields. Well managed field corn in Florida has averaged 50–70 bu/A, while maximum yields with irrigation have rarely exceeded 125 bu/A. Production of fresh market tomatoes, which in Florida have an annual value of 100 million dollars, varies from failure to 25 tons/A using the common cultural procedures.

摘要:
Agricultural Experiment Station researchers can and have played a primary role in the development of the soil testing and plant analysis techniques. Analytical methodology has far outdistanced our ability to use effectively the results of these tests and analyses. Continued research is needed to establish more effective methods of interpreting and utilizing results to prevent or correct uncovered nutrient element deficiencies.

摘要:
The soil and plant analyses performed by the commercial laboratory while similar in many respects to the research or extension programs, vary from them in one or more of the following ways:(l) Results must be made available quickly to the grower. (2) Analyses have to be much more complete. (3) Many analyses of both soil and plant have to be made during the growing season. The frequency of sampling depends upon the plant, soil and climate, and (4) The commercial laboratory must show a profit to stay in business. It is often hampered in doing so by unfair competition of governmental agencies that provide such services free of charge or permit their employees to act as private consultants while holding a government job.

摘要:
Three tobacco varieties were grown for three consecutive years on plots that were fertilized to produce a 2X2 factorial of soil acidity and soil fertility. Leaf samples and height measurements were taken periodically each year. The plant samples were analyzed for eleven elements. Rainfall differences among years provided information concerning the seasonal moisture effects on the treatment variables. Data presented show that the stage of growth, the soil fertility and acidity and the relative moisture stress affect tobacco height and the mineral composition of tobacco leaves. The information can be useful in assigning magnitude and direction for plant age and climatic interactions in practical diagnostic work.

摘要:
Soil samples were obtained at 0–3, 3–6, 6–9 and 0–9 inch depths from experimental plots receiving five tillage treatments. Each of two samplers composited approximately six one‐inch cores from each plot. Soil samples were analyzed for acidity, P and K using routine analysis procedures in the University of Illinois Soil Testing Laboratory.

摘要:
In the dry ashing of plant material for chemical analysis, the hot digestion on the steam bath of the ashed sample was replaced by the quantitative addition of dilute HCl and stirring very briefly to dissolve the ash. By waiting a few minutes for the particles to settle, there was no need to filter the solution prior to dilution with an automatic diluter and the determination of K, Na, Ca and Mg by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The new procedure permits the handling of large batches of samples conveniently, eliminates the use of pipettes and volumetric flasks and decreases the risk of inadvertent contamination by sodium and therefore enhances accuracy. Precision was at least as good as with the standard procedure and the method is expected to be more suitable for use in conjunction with automated analytical techniques.
