摘要:
Peach trees (Prunus persica(L.) Batsch cv. Redhaven) were planted in Turface in 190 1 plastic drums. Trickle irrigation water was applied at 3.8 lph for 1 hr daily. Ammonium nitrate was introduced into the irrigation water by hydraulic displacement. Measurements of trunk diameter growth and leaf N show that tree responses were not reduced when the amount of fertilizer applied through the trickle system was 50% of that applied on the ground.

Laboratory experiments were conducted on 13 West Indian soils to study the extent of B‐adsorption and relate it to soil properties. Boron adsorption was studied by equiliberating soils with relatively low levels of B in solution (up to 5 ppm B). Boron adsorption by these soils could be satisfactorily described by Langmuir equation. Boron adsorption maxima (b) varied more than 10 fold between these soils but the values were much lower than those reported from other tropical areas. The highest correlation of b was with cation exchange capacity (CEC) but other soil properties like clay, organic C, amorphous iron oxides and exchangeable Ca were also significantly related to b. Stepwise regression analysis showed that CEC was the most important factor and accounted for 61%of the variation in b. Cation exchange capacity, amorphous Al, pH and exchangeable Ca together accounted for 87% of the total variation in b.

Concentration ratios (CR values) for cesium and strontium were measured in tumbleweed shoots as a function of plant age and radionuclide concentration in a totally mixed soil and radionuclide system. At a given plant age, CR values were found to be independent of soil concentration over five orders of magnitude for Sr and three orders of magnitude for Cs. CR values for Sr in 4‐, 8‐, and 12‐week old plants were 10.8, 9.6, and 19, and for Cs were 0.025, 0.033, and 0.053, respectively. Based on shoot growth and tissue concentration data for Sr and Cs, the CR values appear to be dependent on shoot dry matter production, with the rate of uptake of Sr and Cs remaining relatively constant over the 12‐week period.

Soils dried by microwave radiation drying had chemical test values different from those of either air‐ or oven‐dried soils. The effects, however, were not consistent among the four soils tested, indicating that neither clay content nor organic matter governed the observed response. Some test values were correlated to accumulative radiation received, but not always for the same analysis or the same soil. The erratic chemical response soils exhibited to microwave drying indicate that this method should not be used in any chemical‐test procedure without first establishing a suitable correlation factor for soil type and drying time.
