摘要:
The effects of sample preparation and storage on levels of water‐soluble Mn in 5 Mississippi soils were determined. Steam sterilization has the most pronounced effect followed by methyl bromide and various degrees of air‐drying. In general, storage of soils in the moist or frozen condition will result in minimum changes in water‐soluble Mn. However, expected changes are not predictable and each soil will have to be investigated separately if it is necessary to know the effect of a particular treatment on available Mn.

This study was conducted to ascertain the percent of available K, Cl, and SO4‐S recovered by alfalfa (MedicagosativaL. cv. ‘Vernal') herbage when various rates of K as KCl and K2SO4were topdressed and also to determine where residual K, Cl, and SO4‐S accumulated in the soil profile. An established stand of alfalfa growing on low fertility silt loam soil was topdressed in the spring of each of two harvest years with 0, 448, 896, 1344, and 1792 kg/ha of K as KCl or K2SO4. Four harvests were taken during each harvest year (1972 and 1973). Soil samples were taken during the autumn of 1973 to a depth of 91.4 cm in KCl‐fertilized plots, and to a depth of 76.2 cm in K2SO4‐fertilized and control plots.

摘要:
Crystalline minerals in anaerobically digested sewage sludges were determined by x‐ray diffraction analysis. Sludge samples were prepared for x‐ray analysis by either washing with H2O to remove soluble salts or oxidizing organic matter with H2O. A limited number of minerals are present as crystalline materials in sludge. Even though the sludges contained appreciable concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb and Ni, no crystalline metal sulfides, phosphates, hydroxides, oxides or carbonates were found with the exception of a possible Cu, Zn carbonate hydroxide. All other crystalline components detected are common minerals such as quartz, feldspar, montmorillonite, chlorite, mica, dolomite and calcite.

The application of NH4NO3to a light sandy loam and a heavy silty clay loam revealed that irrespective of whether soil was limed or unlimed, NH4‐N was neither nitrified nor lost during winter but NO3‐N was completely removed from the light soil and substantially reduced in the heavy. Under simulated summer weather much of the NH4‐N was nitrified when either the sandy loam or the silty clay loam was limed and it was in the NO3‐N form that most of the losses occurred, probably by denitrification.

Differences in elemental content of pecan [Carya illinoensis(Wang.) K. Koch] leaves among cultivars were found for N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn and Zn. Of the 7 elements studied, only leaf K indicated a date by cultivar interaction. Differences in leaf K among cultivars became greater as the season progressed. Increasing rate of application of N‐P‐K fertilizer increased leaf N, Ca, Mn, and Al, but had very little or erratic effect on leaf P, K, Fe, B, Cu, Zn, and Sr. There were very few consistent significant fertilizer rate by date interactions for the 13 elements tested. Seasonal trends for element leaf contents from mid‐May through October were generally downward for N, upward for Ca, Mn, Fe, B, Cu, Al, and Ba and changed very little for Mg, Zn, and Sr. Leaf P and K responses to sampling date varied with year. Large year to year variations in leaf trends over dates suggests difficulty in selecting a period for leaf sampling where little change in leaf levels consistently occurs.

摘要:
Linear correlations between pecan leaf element concn for 13 elements and 37 different sampling date pairs were determined to study the closeness of the relationship of leaf element conen across dates and years. Correlations were highly significant for leaf Mg, Zn, Mn, and Ba; only fair for Ca, Fe, B, Al, and Sr; and poor for N, P, K, and Cu. Data indicated that the period of the first week of July through the first week of August was about as good as any other period for sampling for all elements.
