摘要:
Use of the chloride specific ion electrode to determine chloride in plants was evaluted. Direct potentiometric determination of chloride by the electrode resulted in unreproducible and extremely high chloride values. However, use of this electrode to indicate the end point in titration of the tissue‐extract mixture with AgNO3gave results nearly identical to those obtained by the Mohr procedure. The potentiometric titration procedure developed was found to be a rapid, simple and accurate method of determining the chloride concentration in plants.

摘要:
Sulfate concentration in the equilibrium solutions of a black solonetz soil was different at each moisture content. In the sub‐surface horizons a decrease in soil moisture up to about 35 percent resulted in a gradual increase of sulfate concentration. However, with further decrease in moisture the sulfate concentration increased abruptly. Variation of sulfate concentration appears to alter significantly certain cation ratios in the equilibrium solutions.

A study was made to estimate the error that could result from analyzing decayed plant samples. Uniform groups of corn leaves were permitted to reach variable degrees of decomposition. Dry weight losses were calculated. Samples were then dried and analyzed to establish apparent analyses.

The availability of soil Mn to corn in relation to extractability of soil Mn by EDTA, Mg(NO3)2, CH3COONH4, hydroquinone, H3PO4, and NH4H2PO4as affected by liming was evaluated under field conditions on a single soil type. EDTA, Mg(NO3)2and CH3COONH4‐extractable Mn were related inversely to available Mn. No useful relationships were found between hydroquinone, H3PO4, and NH4H2PO4‐extractable soil Mn and Mn uptake by sweet corn.

The concentrations of several elements were found to be different among the margin, midrib and blade of a corn leaf. The B, Mn and Si content of the margin was higher than that in the midrib or blade. The N, P, Ca, Mg, Si, Mn, B, Cu, Zn, Al, Sr and Mo content of the midrib was less than that in the blade and margin. Element contents of quarter length sections were different as the ratio of blade to margin or midrib varied. These data demonstrate the need to specifically describe leaf sampling technique and preparatory procedure when sampling corn plants for diagnostic purposes. The author recommends that Chapman's suggested leaf sampling procedure for corn be adopted in order to minimize the influence of margin and midribs on blade analyses.

A study was made to evaluate Zn removed by extraction with a 0.075Nacid mixture (0.05NHCl + 0.025NH2SO4). A ratio of soil to extracting solution of 1 to 4 and an extracting time of 15 minutes was selected. Data obtained by the method was significantly correlated with dithizone (0.01%) extraction. The method was found to be acceptable for evaluation of the Zn status of Southern Coastal Plain soils and easily adapted to routine use in soil testing. A significant correlation was obtained between extractable soil Zn and leaf blade content of Zn for Zn‐deficient and non‐deficient corn plants.

White Rose potato plants were grown in nutrient solutions containing Ca from 0 to 20 meq/l. After 32 days of growth, 16 plant parts were taken for analysis. The critical level for the immature to the recently matured leaf was determined to be about 0.15% Ca for the petiole and the blade tissues at the breaking point of the transition zone. Ca concentrations of petioles and blades (dry basis) increased with leaf age with the greatest increase in the blade tissues. The petioles of recently matured leaves under severe Ca deficiency were higher in Na, Mg, and PO4‐P, lower in N03‐N and about the same in K concentration in comparison with non‐deficient petioles while the corresponding blades did not differ appreciably. Calcium deficiency has no major effect on the uptake of these minerals since all values were in the adequate range.

Added P adsorbed, expressed as a percentage of total added P, was closely and inversely related to added P subsequently desorbed, expressed as a percentage of added P adsorbed. This relationship was not linear but followed a hyperbola‐like curve. For the limiting cases where adsorption was 0% and 100%, desorption was 100% and 0%, respectively. If desorption is the mechanism limiting the release of P into the soil solution for plant utilization, then the well‐established relationship between P adsorbed in the laboratory and the recovery of fertilizer P under field conditions is accounted for.
