摘要:
A simple laboratory technique was developed to determine the effectiveness of surfactants for Zn absorption enhancement by leaf tissues. Soybean leaf disks were floated on a 0.1 mMZnSO4‐ 0.5 mMCaSO4solution containing a surfactant. Different concentrations of six surfactants were studied. In addition to determining the enhancement of Zn absorption with different concentrations of surfactants, it was possible to determine the possible damaging effect if the surfactant concentration was too high.

摘要:
Three extraction methods for aluminium and two for iron were compared with phosphate sorptivity (Bache and Williams index) for 40 tropical and 40 British soil samples. Extractable aluminium was well correlated with phosphate sorptivity in both groups, but extractable iron was well correlated only in British soils. In general methods which extracted more sesquioxides gave higher correlation coefficients. With aluminium, N ammonium acetate (pH 4.8) or 0.1N HCl gave better correlation than N KCl, while with iron dithionitecitrate was better than 0.1N HCl.

摘要:
The availability of soil Zn applied from 7 different sources was tested by growing orange seedlings in pots of typical sandy Florida citrus soil with and without liming. The sources were ZnSO4, ZnO, ZnCO3, metallic Zn powder, glass—fritted Zn, ZnS, and Zn Tracin. The latter is a commercial Zn complex from a wood industry byproduct. Zn was mixed in the soil before planting, at the rates of 25, 50, and 100 ppm. The plants were cut back to force rapid new growth 4 times over a 3‐yr period. Leaf Zn was determined. All sources and rates were satisfactory for good growth, and the sources were approximately equal after 3 yr. Differences in sources were more noticeable during the first 9 mo and on the highest rate of Zn. Liming tended to equalize all sources and rates, and the availability of Zn increased with time on the limed soil.

摘要:
Corn (Zea maysL.) was grown for six consecutive years, beginning in 1966, on Groseclose silt loam to determine the effects of fertilization on leaf composition, yields, and on the changes in available K in the soil. Plant nutrients consisting of five levels each of N, P and K were applied annually in a central composite rotatable design. All plant residue was removed each year when the corn was harvested and the plots were seeded without fertilization to rye as a cover crop.

摘要:
Thirty‐two years after the addition of high rates of potassium to two Illinois experiment fields, the largest gain in soil K was in the acid‐insoluble form. Cation exchange capacity of the soil clays had decreased with the increasing addition of K, presumably due to fixation of potassium in the interlattice positions of clays. An X‐ray diffraction analysis did not provide any conclusive evidence as to the formation of illitic minerals.

摘要:
Ranges for total, 0.1N HCl and EDTA‐(NH4)2CO3extractable Zn in 69 samples of surface soil (0–15 cm), representing nine soil series, were 14–108, 0.9–10.5 and 0.5–8.0 ppm respectively. Total Zn in barley (Hordeum vulgare), carrot (Daucus carata sativa), corn (Zea maysL), grape (Vitis spp.), onion (Allium cepa), pea (Pisum sativum, strawberry (Fragaria spp.), and wheat (Triticum spp.) leaves and in barley and wheat grain ranged from 13.5 to 80.6 ppm.

摘要:
Ferric ethylenediamine di (o‐hydroxyphenylacetic acid) (FeEDDHA) when used on calcareous soil can induce low Mn levels in plants. The effect can be overcome by Mn or ethylenediamihe tetraacetate (EDTA) applications and seems to be related to interference with Mn absorption by FeEDDHA at pH levels over 7. Low levels of FeEDDHA effectively overcome Fe deficiency in calcareous soils without causing decreases in the Mn levels in plants. The implications are that two procedures for avoiding Mn deficiency are adding Mn with FeEDDHA treatments and/or using relatively low levels of FeEDDHA for treatment of plants with Fe deficiency.

摘要:
Alfalfa (medicago sativa) was grown for five consecutive years on Groseclose silt loam to determine the effects of fertilization and cropping on the amounts of available K in the soil profile and on the yield and chemical composition of the alfalfa. Plant nutrients consisting of 0, 16, 40, 64 and 80 kg P/ha and 0, 60, 150, 240 and 300 kg K/ha were applied annually in a central composite rotatable design in the spring of each year beginning in 1966.

摘要:
Silicon is a major constituent of grasses, therefore, research was initiated to evaluate the use of the paraffin technique for electron probe microanalysis of Si in grass leaf tissue. Mature healthy leaves of a tropical grass, Wilmington bahiagrass (Paspalum notatumFlügge), and a cool season grass, tall fescuegrass (Festuca arundinaceaSchred), were selected for study. Paradermal sections (10 μ) of paraffin impregnated leaf tissue were placed on sheet carbon that had been attached with Haupt's adhesive to 2.5 cm glass discs. The grass sections were fixed to the sheet carbon with Haupt's adhesive and the paraffin removed with xylene prior to microanalysis. Silicon was found to be highly concentrated in the epidermis of fescuegrass and bahiagrass. Short cells, many containing opal bodies, had the highest contents of Si of the epidermal cells. Large quantities of Si was also present in guard cells but long cells contained relatively small amounts.
