AbstractWe consider problems of designing vibrating beams or rotating shafts to obtain as large gaps as possible in the spectra of natural frequencies or critical speeds in order to avoid resonance or whirling instability for a wide range of external excitation frequencies or service speeds. Governing equations for such design problems are derived by variational analysis of a bound formulation, and a numerical solution to an example problem is discussed.

AbstractThe adjustment of noisy accelerometer data to prevent drift in the velocity and displacement trajectories is formulated as a discrete‐time optimal control problem. It is shown that large penalties on the terminal velocity and displacement produce large feedback gains towards the end of the time interval and result in unrealistic adjustments. An adjustment procedure is proposed in which a small penalty is placed on the entire time history of the velocity and displacement. The solution of the associated algebraic Riccati equation yields steady‐state feedback gains which produce satisfactory adjustments of the acceleration measurements and generate realistic velocity and displacement trajector

AbstractBased on a new unified theory, multivariable adaptive generalized minimum variance and model reference adaptive control are applied to three different types of processes. The improvement of control quality in a foil coating process using adaptive control is significant. Reduced energy costs can be really achieved on distillation columns as shown on a production column. The tuning of a multivariable controller for a turbogenerator can be done automatically and yields satisfactory disturbance rejection. The examples illustrate that adaptive control using these techniques has reached a high degree of maturity, making it a powerful tool for the control engineer.

AbstractA new implicit dual technique is presented for stochastic adaptive control synthesis. In this technique, denoted as the method of utility costs (MOUC), a new control policy is derived from a known starting control policy by using a single iteration in time‐varying policy space. An important result is that the new control policy yields a corresponding improvement in adaptive performance relative to the known starting policy. Since the starting policy can be chosen arbitrarily, the new policy has potentially superior performance relative to any existing design. Unlike other implicit dual designs, the MOUC can be applied to systems having constrained inputs, discontinuities, discrete valued disturbances, as well as in situations where the variances of the associated process statistics are large. AbstractThis paper analyzes an optimal control model dealing with a problem in criminal justice policy. It is assumed that a society generates criminals at a constant rate. The size of the criminal population at any time depends on the criminal generation rate and the number of criminals prosecuted and imprisoned. Optimal prosecution rate over time is found by using Pontryagin's principle. The objective is to minimize the total discounted cost of the damages inflicted by the criminals plus the cost of law enforcement. Explicit forms of the optimal trajectories are found in both the finite and infinite horizon cases. In the latter case, a stability analysis of the optimal steady‐state is also presented. The paper concludes with a comparative statics analysis of the equilibrium and a description of the optimal control of a more detailed criminal justice system mode
