AbstractA two‐country fishery management game is considered in the realm of the theory of non‐co‐operative and co‐operative differential games. Conditions which guarantee global asymptotic stability of the open‐loop equilibrium trajectories are given and applied to a class of harvest games. Co‐operative solutions of the two‐country fishery management games are examined for the case of Kalaï‐Smorodinsky bargaining schemes. We show that the use of retaliation threats can transform a co‐operative solution into an equilibrium memory strategy. Two numerical examples present an analysis of threat effectiveness. AbstractTwo new design methods are proposed for optimal PI control which give fast recovery from load disturbances without producing large overshoots associated with set‐point changes. Unlike existing methods, such as set‐point filtering or any other scheme that essentially detunes the controller for set‐point changes, the proposed methods do not increase the rise time significantly in order to reduce overshoot. The first method resets the integral term in the control law when the new set point is reached. The second method is a modified model‐following approach that does not increase the overall dimension of the system. AbstractMany applications of optimization theory require the solution of a set of coupled Riccati equations. In multi‐person‐games problems, the players' decision for the Nash equilibrium depend on Riccati equations coupled through their quadratic terms. Another example is provided by linear‐quadratic control. When the system is subject to sudden and random changes in parameter values, the optimal feedback is computed from the solution of Riccati equations coupled through their weighting terms. AbstractThe solutions of optimal control problems are sensitive to the changes of parameters which can occur due to either their statistical nature or to an identification which is only approximate. To allow a reduction of this sensitivity two scalar sensitivity measures are proposed which can be incorporated into an augmented performance index. Different interpretations of the measures are given.As a first application, the problem of an insensitive feedforward control is investigated. An efficient numerical method for its solution is given. An example demonstrates not only the feasibility of this new approach but also the possible improvement in comparison to the standard optimal control procedure for problems where knowledge about system uncertainties has to be included in the design.
