摘要:
AbstractA complete open barrier surface is constructed in the ‘Game of two cars’ differential game of kind with a circular target set. Our geometric approach has the advantages, among others, that it yields the explicit barrier termination conditions and that it highlights the geometric meaning of the universal and dispersal curves on the barr

摘要:
AbstractIn Reference 1, Wu and Miele developed the sequential conjugate gradient‐restoration algorithm for minimizing a functional subject to differential constraints, with or without non‐differential constraints, and general boundary conditions. In this paper, several numerical examples are presented. Some of these pertain to a quadratic functional subject to linear constraints, and some pertain to a non‐quadratic functional subject to non‐linear constraints. These examples demonstrate the feasibility as well as the convergence characteristics of the sequential conjugate gradient‐restoration

摘要:
AbstractThe paper introduces the practical problems associated with automated control of large‐scale non‐linear water networks and gives the additional theoretical requirements for optimizing the network operation. A control scheme is presented which is intended for computer controlled operations and hence requires on‐line evaluation of optimal control strategies based on a simulation of the overall dynamics of the network. Realistic applications of the scheme are shown to depend on adequate simplifications of the network performance, and results are given for development of linear dynamic models together with cost criteria in linear or quadratic form. Use of a hierarchical optimization technique permits a solution to be obtained to the remaining problems of high dimensionality with constrained variables. Application of the method to a complex network leads to results which are consistent with normal operational experience and which give minimized overall

摘要:
AbstractThe problem of optimal load transmission by flexure, and in particular the minimum moment volume problem in transversely loaded plane systems, is one of the few structural optimization problems admitting closed form solutions. The theory gives the minimum weight solutions for grillages, fibre‐reinforced plates, and space frames of preassigned depth. Characteristically, the route to the solution is through energy arguments or the calculus of variations. Early work also employed informal logical arguments, linear programming, and concave programming in the case of reinforced concrete slabs. More recently, concise function theoretic methods in Banach spaces have appeared. Initial investigations by the authors suggest that the optimum flexure problem can be handled straightforwardly by optimal control systems theory, a theory which offers the prospect of a consistent and systematic approach to design problems in general. New interpretations of, and insights into, the optimum flexure problem may be gained through optimal control theor

摘要:
AbstractIn this paper the application of the self‐scaling variable metric methods to optimal control problems is considered. The convergence of such methods in Hilbert space, both with and without line searches, is established for a wide class of convex functionals. The methods are then tested numerically on control problems, and the results are compared with earlier results for other variable metric algorithm

摘要:
AbstractThe design of dynamic ship positioning control systems and their associated wave filters is considered. The control problems and the basic components in the system are discussed first. The model of the vessel is then described, since this plays an important role in the design of the Kalman filter which is used to estimate the low frequency motions of the vessel. The model involves both high and low frequency subsystems. The total linearized model for the vessel is represented by state equations, and simulation results are given to illustrate the performance of the Kalman filter. A comparison with a notch filter is also presented. The design of the optimal control system using LQG stochastic control results is considered. The operation of the system under various operating conditions is illustrated. Schemes involving the extended Kalman filter are then described. These enable more realistic non‐linear models of the plant to be employed within the filter. This is shown to be unnecessary in the case of the low frequency ship model. However, the extended filter may be useful to track varying wave conditions (using parameter estimation) as represented in the high frequency model. Two extended filtering schemes are presented for this cas
