AbstractThis paper presents a Walsh function approach to the minimum energy control of linear systems with time delay satisfying given conditions on the terminal state. Walsh operational matrices for integration, delay and advance1are employed in solving the related state and costate equations containing terms with advanced and delayed arguments. The technique of extension of the solution with a single term Walsh series2is adapted to the case of differential equations with delay and advance terms, leading to an enormous reduction in computational effort. The results may be computed in two forms, piecewise constant or discrete, satisfying both the energy and terminal conditions.

AbstractThis paper presents a new method for solving the symmetric algebraic Riccati equation from optimal control. The new method employs ‘Riccati iteration’ as used for time‐scale decoupling in structural vibration problems. The rate of convergence of the algorithm is governed by the relative separation of small and large eigenvalues in the shifted Hamiltonian equations. If this ratio of eigenvalues is less than one, the algorithm is globally convergent. AbstractThe design of multivariable control systems using pole assignment has resulted in much research. Owing to system or parameter variation, the initial compensator design for constant conditions may lead to undesirable responses. Hence, it is important to design compensator structures which maintain desired pole locations under such changes.This paper presents a design methodology for output feedback pole assignment when there is system variation. A performance measure is formulated which represents a squared‐error between desired pole locations and the actual pole locations generated via compensation under probabilistic variations. Optimization of this measure requires constructing gradient matrices necessary to obtain the compensator parameters.Both constant output feedback and dynamic compensation are discussed for pole placement, and the unstable Boeing‐Vertol CH‐46 helicopter system is considered to illustrate the design algor
