AbstractThis paper introduces a design methodology for a dynamic compensator that simultaneously minimizes the upper bound of a quadratic performance index and theH∞‐norm of a disturbance transfer function matrix of a multiple‐input/multiple‐output system whose model contains parameter uncertainty in the state and input matrices. The real parameter uncertainty is modelled as additional measurement outputs and as additional weights on the existing noise inputs and measurement outputs of the system. AbstractInH∞optimal control the cost function is the maximum singular value of a transfer function matrix over a frequency range. The optimization is over all stabilizing controllers. In constrainedH∞control the controllers typically have a fixed structure, perhaps conveniently parametrized in terms of a parameter vector. Also, there may be functional constraints involving singular values representing, for example, robustness requirements. Such problems are usually cast as non‐smooth optimization problems.In this paper we consider a general class of constrainedH∞optimization problems and show that these problems can be approximated by a sequence of smooth optimization problems. Thus each of the approximate problems is readily solvable by standard optimization software packages such as those available in the NAG or IMSL library. AbstractThree techniques forrobusteigenvalue assignment are presented. The first is well known and is based on iteratively assigning the closed‐loop eigenvectors so as to be maximally orthogonal to one another. The second has been recently presented by the authors and is an improvement of the first which gives better results for problems where complex‐conjugate eigenvalue pairs are to be assigned. The final method isnewand is founded on the iterative replacement of the current closed‐loop eigenvector matrix with a new matrix which is the projection of the columns of the nearest orthogonal matrix into the allowable eigenvector subspaces.
