摘要:
AbstractNew problem statements for the optimal design of thin‐wall structural elements are considered by means of optimal control theory. The distribution of initial curvature of shallow curvilinear structural elements in a non‐strain state is taken as the control function.1–3Integral stiffness is considered as the optimized performance index. The necessary optimality condition and the partial differential equations for the adjoint variables are derived. An analysis of these relations is carried out, and the initial optimal control problem is reduced to a boundary problem of the bending of an uncurved element. Problems of optimal design of plates under transverse loads, as well as under tensile or compression forces acting in the middle surface, are studied. Analogous problems of optimal design for shallow curvilinear plates on an elastic foundation are also investigated. Some two‐dimensional analytical solutions for optimal plates under loads of different types are o

摘要:
AbstractAn algorithm has been developed for the analysis and design of controls for non‐linear systems. The technical approach is to use statistical linearization to model the non‐linear dynamics of a system by a quasi‐Gaussian model. A covariance analysis is performed to determine the behaviour of the dynamical system and a quadratic cost function. Expressions for the cost function and its derivatives are determined so that numerical optimization techniques can be applied to determine optimal feedback laws. The primary application for this paper is centred about the design of controls for nominally linear systems but where the controls are saturated or limited by fixed constraints. The analysis is general, however, and numerical computation requires only that the specific non‐linearity be considered in the a

摘要:
AbstractActive‐constraint logic for non‐linear programming processes is sought such that the constraints in the active set possess positive projection multipliers and the resulting step does not violate the linear approximations to any of the constraints satisfied as equalities but considered inactive. Active‐constraint logic which has the desired properties is given for the cases of two and three constraints. For the general case featuring more than three constraints satisfied as equalities, an active‐set logic is suggested. The efficiency of the proposed logic is tested computationally on some quadratic programming problems in comparison with three existing active‐set s

摘要:
AbstractThis paper deals with the problem of finding optimal hiring and firing policies for profit‐maximizing and labour‐managed firms whose objective is to maximize profits and net income per worker, respectively. Assuming a concave production function with labour force as a variable production factor, a non‐linear demand function, increasing marginal production costs, and convex costs of changing the labour force, we determine the optimal employment strategies by the maximum principle. By using phase portrait analysis, we prove that for a relatively small manpower stock the optimal policies of the profit‐maximizing firms are to increase its labour force over time such that the increase is largest in the beginning. However, for a ‘large’ initial stock, firing can be optimal at the beginning. For a labour‐managed firm, the same behaviour is shown to be optimal for the infinite‐time‐horizon problem only under additional assumptions. The joint analysis of profit‐maximizing and labour‐managed firms provides a possibility to compare the optimal stationar

摘要:
AbstractA method is presented for determining a control which steers a system to a specified target when there are magnitude constraints on the control. The method is suitable for numerical computation since it only involves solving finite‐dimensional optimization problems. The effectiveness of the technique is illustrated by applying it to the problem of suspending a ferromagnetic rotor in a magnetic fiel
