AbstractThis paper considers a pole assignment problem to cluster all poles of a closed‐loop system into some specified regions by introducing the complex state for systems having an isotropic property and by using the Riccati equation. The algebraic relations for the distribution of the eigenvalues of a complex matrix are used in order to cluster the poles into specified regions, which guarantees the relative stability margin, e.g. uniform damping or uniform damping ratio. The proposed scheme is essentially a combination of the pole assignment approach and linear quadratic design, taking the advantages of both. A block modal control method—an extension of recursive pole assignment—is also developed for the vibration control of rotating systems by clustering the forward and backward modes in order. Vibration control simulations with an isotropic rotor—bearing system, a magnetic bearing system and a rotating circular disc are treated in order to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed

AbstractTwo adaptive root‐locus control schemes for processes with time delays have been developed. The control design methodologies are based on classical feedback control and Smith predictor structures with simple pole placement. The overall behaviour of both control systems is adapted along the root loci of the system in each control horizon. Since the Smith predictor structure includes time delay compensation, the tuning gain can be enlarged to improve the performance of the control system. The optimal tuning gain is repeatedly updated by an optimization technique when the estimated model is confirmed. A comparison with simplified model predictive control (SMPC) is also given. SMPC in SISO systems is a special case of the proposed control law

AbstractThe time‐domain Routh‐approximant method for model reduction of large‐scale systems is modified and enhanced in this paper. A new transformation matrix that overcomes a limitation of earlier work is proposed. This feature greatly enhances the multivariable method. Some interesting results on symmetry properties are developed in conjunction with a structure example. A sufficiency condition of stability of the reduced‐order model is identified. AbstractAn optimal control model is developed that combines cost reduction through R&D with pricing. Price and R&D spending level are control variables and unit cost is a state variable. Analysis of the model reveals that if a firm has a positive discount rate, optimal R&D spending on cost reduction may grow to a peak before eventually declining. If the firm has a zero discount rate, optimal R&D spending declines monotonically across time. Optimal price declines monotonically in either case, in a direct relationship with unit cost.

AbstractThere has been considerable debate among marketing researchers about the optimality of popularly used advertising policies. In particular, the ratio rule has aroused much interest. This paper analyses its optimality under the expected profit maximization criterion for a general class of models. The optimality of the ratio rule extends to the stochastic case provided that the conditions which ensure its optimality for the deterministic case are enlarged by an additional restriction. This additional restriction has the effect of transforming the stochastic evolution of goodwill and sales to log‐normal processes.
