摘要:
An experimental laboratory investigation of the wear of railroad rail and car wheel materials has shown that increasing the hardness of rails will reduce rail wear but will increase wheel wear. Similarly, harder wheels will reduce wheel wear, but at the expense of increased rail wear. Decreasing relative humidity will substantially increase wear of both materials and will accentuate differential hardness effects.

摘要:
A series of tests on a transparent model of a multistage magnetic seal were run in order to both verify a previously conducted analysis of magnetic-fluid sealing as well as to extend our knowledge on the nature and mechanism of seal operation and seal failure.

摘要:
Nine symmetric three-lobe bearings with preloads ranging from 0.00 to 0.88 and L/D ratios from 0.33 to 0.67 were tested with a rigid rotor. The load angle was also varied for each bearing. In this paper, the static operating characteristics are presented and compared to a theoretical solution. The experimental and theoretical relationships between the eccentricity ratio and Sommerfeld number were found to agree best for small values of bearing preload. The experimental and theoretical loci of operating points within the bearing clearance circle were found to agree best for large values of bearing preload. For positive values of preload, the operating position of the shaft in the bearing clearance circle was also found to approach the oil grooves for small values of Sommerfeld number.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASME/ASLE Lubrication Conference in San Francisco, California, August 18–21, 1980.

摘要:
An analysis of the accelerating thrust bearing characteristics in turbulent flow are presented. Numerical solutions to the governing differential equations are obtained for the case of constant but arbitrary acceleration and for the case of acceleration proportional to time. An eddy viscosity model based on Van Driest damping parameter is utilized to resolve the turbulent stress.

摘要:
A reciprocating short-stroke friction apparatus with several novel features is described. Friction can be measured reproducibly up to 350°C with easily obtainable test pieces. The change from boundary to hydrodynamic lubrication occurred at a constant value of the product (frequency×viscosity×stroke length), so high shear rate surface viscosities could be determined. When fatty acids in cetane lubricated steel, thick viscous films were formed whose viscosities were measured over a range of temperatures. Tests showed the action of EP-lubricants, typified by dibenzyl disulfide (dbds), could be explained by adsorption of polar materials on the dbds modified surface. A polar material was needed in the lubricant for the dbds to act.

摘要:
The Reynolds equation of hydrodynamic lubrication is normally used to determine the damping coefficients in the analysis of rotor-dynamic system with squeeze-film dampers. Lubrication theory assumes that the fluid motion is precisely in phase with the bearing surface motion, but at high speeds both inertia and viscoelasticity introduce phase-shifting effects into the fluid motion. As a result, predictions derived from Reynolds' equation can be significantly in error. An earlier series of papers developed a theory to account for the influences of viscoelasticity and inertia in arbitrary oscillatory squeezing flows of small amplitude. The theory is applied here to develop improved expressions for the linear damping coefficients, in terms of the Reynolds and Deborah number. Evaluation of the corrected formulae show that fluid inertia and viscoelasticity have large effects on the coefficients.

摘要:
The offset-halves journal bearing is a commonly used noncircular bearing configuration. However, the design data of these bearings in the published literature is quite limited. In this paper, the task of providing comprehensive design data, including both static and dynamic performance characteristics for the offset-halves journal bearing has been taken up. All the design data reported in this paper are nondimensional and have been obtained for an offset factor of 0.5 and four aspect ratios (1/3, 1/2, 2/3, and 1). Further, these design data cover laminar as well as turbulent regimes of operation with four values of Reynolds number (3000, 6000, 9000, and 12000).
