摘要:
Diagnosis of wear regime can be made by examination of the wear particles in terms of the number or weight fraction in each size range. Consideration of the alternatives lends to the conclusion that a Weibull plot by weight (Rosin-Rammler) is the most useful. Application of this diagnosis to simplified wear rate equations can result in more meaningful prognosis of life expectancy. The relations to the more familiar SOAP, Ferrograph and chip detector methods are explored.Presented at the 35th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, May 5–8, 1980

摘要:
Experimental friction data for full-complement water-lubricated stage bearings are presented and discussed. The test bearings are of similar construction to those used by the U.S. Navy for propulsion shaft support in outboard locations such as sterntube and strut bearings. Breakaway friction characteristics are compared for seven slave designs under a load of 280 kPa (40 psi). The duration of load was varied from 1 minute to almost 70 hours. Dynamic friction results are also presented for each stave design under loads of 70, 280 and 700 kPa (10, 40 and 100 psi, respectively) in incremental speeds up to 3.6 m/s (700 ft/min).Presented at the 35th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, May 5–8, 1980

摘要:
Existing theories of erosion of ductile metals based on cutting and deformation mechanisms predict no material removal at normal incidence which is contradictory to experience. Thus, other mechanisms may be involved. The possible role of adhesive material transfer during erosion is investigated by both single-particle impingement experiments and erosion by streams of particles.

摘要:
The theory for the entrainment of solid-lubricant coatings developed by White and Wilson is modified to allow for the effect of increases in the lubricant shear strength due to applied pressure, including the case where the lubricant strength approaches that of the workpiece. The latter condition is analyzed using the force diagram associated with the upperbound velocity field. The modified theory shows good agreement with experimental measurement of the entrained film thickness of lead, lead/tin, alkyd-bonded graphite, and polyethylene coatings on steel and/or aluminum workpieces.Presented at the 35th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, May 5–8, 1980

摘要:
The pressure dam bearing is a type of fluid film bearing in widespread use for enhancing rotor stability. Analytical refinements have been made to existing theory for predicting its performance characteristics and optimizing designs. This paper describes experiments conducted for evaluating the theory. Four designs were tested, with the basic for comparison being the static pressure generated at the dam. Measured differences from the refined theoretical predictions were generally less than 16% and are attributed to manufacturing errors which caused deviations from the theoretical model.Presented at the 35th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, May 5–8, 1980

摘要:
The Ferrograph was used to determine the types and quantities of wear particles generated during full-scale bearing fatigue test. Deep-groove ball bearings made from AISI 52100 steel were used. A MIL-L-23699 tetraester lubricant was used in a Recirculating lubrication system containing a 49-μm absolute filter. Test conditions included a maximum Hertz stress of 2.4 GPa, a shaft speed of 15 000 rpm and a lubricant supply temperature of 74°C (165°F). four fatigue failures were detected by accelerometers in this test set. In general, the Ferrograph was more sensitive (up to 23 h) in detecting spall initiation than either accelerometers or the normal spectrographic oil analysis (SOAP). Four particle types were observed: normal rubbing wear particles, spheres, nonferrous particles, and severe wear (spall) fragments.Presented at the 35th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, May 5–8, 1980

摘要:
Addition of trichloroethane to a traction fluid was studied in a ball/diamond plate EHD apparatus by infrared emission spectroscopy of the radiation transmitted through the plate. Small concentrations of an organic chloride at first increased infrared radiance, then decreased it. Large concentrations caused a rapid decrease. During running, the infrared spectrum showed an increase of aromatics and olefins. A polymeric deposit formed on the plate. X-ray examination of the ball surface showed the presence of chlorine. Reuse of the same ball with fresh fluid resulted in similar chain of events, indicating that adsorbed chloride could promote fluid deterioration.Presented at the 35th Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California, May 5–8, 1980

摘要:
This paper presents an analysis of a three-lobe porous hydrodynamic journal bearing for its static and dynamic performance characteristics. The performance characteristics of the bearing have been computed and presented in graphical form for a wide range of permeability parameter to investigate the effect of porosity on bearing performance. The stability margin of the three-lobe journal bearing system, in terms of crtical mass of journal, has been established using Routh's criteria. The nature of transient motion of the journal has been analyzed using the complex eigen values of characteristic equation and motion trajectories obtained by numerical integration of equations of motion.
