摘要:
When antifriction bearings operate in a “clean” environment, the primary mode of damage will be the eventual fatigue of the surfaces where rolling contact occurs. This type of damage is a function of load, alignment, bearing setting, speed, plus temperature and quality of the lubricant.

摘要:
The replacement of hydrogen atoms with deuterium atoms in a synthetic hydrocarbon lubricant has been shown to substantially improve its oxidation resistance. In addition, it was determined that the antifriction bearing performance life of a MIL-G-81322 grease, formulated with the deuterium substituted fluid, increased significantly at 400 F. The results of this investigation are presented along with an explanation based on the thermodynamic and kinetic differences between the carbon-hydrogen chemical bond and the carbon-deuterium chemical bond.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference held in Miami Beach, Florida, October 21–23, 1975

摘要:
As part of a study to determine the lubricant factors affecting fatigue of rolling contact bearings, the effects of base oil composition and viscosity for additive blends on the fatigue life of CVD 52100 steel balls were evaluated with a 4-ball fatigue machine. Using pure hydrocarbons as base stocks, aromatic hydrocarbons were found to not only give longer lives than paraffins or naphthenes but also exhibit extremes in additive response. Using different distillation cuts to cover the viscosity range from 2.3 to 24 mm2/s, life tended to increase with increasing viscosity for each of four series of mineral oils whereas the addition of antiwear and EP additives generally reduced life. In contrast, increasing the viscosity by reducing the test temperature increased life for most additive blends. The hydraulic wedge mechanism for fatigue, modified to include surface coating formation effects, seems to account for the observed results.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference held in Miami Beach, Florida, October 21–23, 1975

摘要:
A special test station was designed and developed to examine self-lubricating composite wear rate and the mechanism of transfer film formation that occur in bearings operating with composite retainers. The apparatus is constructed to approximate (a) the sliding contact between the ball separator pockets and the balls and (b) the rolling contact between bearing balls and races. The ball bearing simulator is capable of duplicating varying ranges of (a) ball/race rolling velocities (unidirectional or oscillating); (b) ball/race (Hertzian) bearing loads; (c) ball/composite loads; and (d) total included ball/race oscillatory angles. The experimental arrangement provides for in situ photomicrography of the ball and race paths and interferometric thickness determination of sufficiently transparent lubricative transfer films (e.g., formed by reinforced PTFE/MoS2composites). This test station can be used as an intermediate tool for understanding the quantitative effects of bearing (operational) parameters on composite retainer wear and film formation. A method is proposed whereby excessive wear of the retainer is designated to be the primary failure mode of self-lubricated ball bearings. Composite wear, however, can be quantitatively described by factorial (empirical) wear equations. These equations are derived from computer regression analysis of data obtained from statistical test matrices of bearing simulator tests. Simultaneous determination of transfer film thickness and ball/race damage can eventually lead to a unified, empirical method of self-lubricated bearing performance prediction.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference held in Miami Beach, Florida, October 21–23, 1975

摘要:
Lubrication by in situ-formed films of soft metals has been discovered for several metal (gold, silver, and copper) alkyl phos-phonates and gold dialkylphosphorodithioates. This novel lubricating function of oil soluble compounds has been demonstrated in bench wear tests. Deposition of metal occurs only on the rubbing contact surfaces and it is found to be more prevalent on the surface of higher temperature. Highest reductions in wear are observed when the film forms only on one surface, so that in effect, steel is sliding against a film of soft metal.Presented as an American Society of Lubrication Engineers paper at the ASLE/ASME Lubrication Conference held in Miami Beach, Florida, October 21–23, 1975

摘要:
The paper describes experiments where thin films of polymers are deposited on smooth rigid substrates and rigid smooth sliders are slid over the organic films. The influence of temperature and pressure on the interfacial shear properties of a range of poly n-alkyl methacrylates is presented. The behavior of these materials is compared with that of polythenes. The effect of progressively increasing the length of the hydrocarbon side chain moiety in the methacrylates is investigated; the behavior of the polythenes is regarded as the limiting case for infinitely long hydrocarbon side chains.

摘要:
A study was conducted to determine the effect of the number of lobes and lobe height on out-of-round shafts, shaft speed, seal lip load, and fluid temperature on the lip wear characteristics of polyacrylate radial lip seals. Seals molded from four compounds formulated with and without graphite in both plain and helical lip configurations were investigated by means of a fractional factorial experiment. Results of the study show lip load, shaft lobe height, and number of lobes to be significant at the I percent level while shaft speed and fluid temperature are significant at the 5 percent level. The addition of graphite and lip design had no significant effect. An analysis of the results suggests that the seals were operating hydrodynamically.Presented at the 31st Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, May 10–13, 1976

摘要:
The paper outlines the design requirements and constantly increasing demands, particularly in respect of surface speed, placed upon self-contained vertical bearings. Two types of bearing in present-day use are described and the limitations, inherent in design, upon performance discussed.
