ABSTRACT:The results of controlled clinical trials assessing the routine use of ultrasound in obstetrics have not provided convincing evidence of benefit but do provide important data on the need for further clinical research. This report recommends research related to the efficacy, safety, and cost of routine ultrasound methods in clinical obstetrics, including the psychosocial and ethical implications of these applications.

ABSTRACT:The Forum on Malpractice Issues in Childbirth: 1985 brought together a multidisciplinary group of representatives of 70 major national organizations from health, government, law, insurance underwriting, and the public to examine professional liability issues in childbirth and to develop recommendations and strategies for action. The participants—67 from the United States, three from Canada, and one from England–were assigned to seven work groups, each addressing a different issue.
