ABSTRACT:Previous studies report a preference of human mothers for holding their infants on the left side of the body, regardless of maternal handedness. This study describes maternal lateral preferences during the first hour after 100 deliveries. Seventy‐one of the women pulled their infants to their left sides when they first held them and 29 held them on the right. The disparity persisted for the full hour following birth. These results are similar to those reported in previous studies and support the hypothesis that the human mother has a natural tendency to hold her infant on the left side of the body. ABSTRACT:Of 100 new mothers self‐selected for study, 87 percent breastfed for at least 2 weeks, and a mean of 6.8 months. Upon weaning, 29 percent of infants were given cow's milk and the remainder were fed formula. ABSTRACT:This paper describes SINAPS, a program of primary health care in Guatemala, planned by the Ministry of Public Health (MOH), Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama (INCAP). The objective was to design, implement, and evaluate a program of primary health care in Guatemala based on service delivery by non‐professional personnel. These personnel consist of Auxiliary Nurses (AN), Rural Health Technicians (RHT), Rural Health Promoters (RHP), and Traditional Birth Attendants (TBA).SINAPS activities are focused on immunizations, food supplementation, oral rehydration of children suffering from dehydration, family planning, perinatal surveillance, and promotion of health and environmental sanitation, with the participation of the community. ABSTRACT:In the third commentary in our Roundtable evidence is presented that malnutrition around the time of conception can cause fetal malformation. However, disagreeing with the analysis of the Wynns in the last Roundtable, the authors present evidence that in mothers who have an inadequate increase in triceps skin fold thickness a balanced protein energy supplement resulted in increased fetal growth. Supplementation ofother mothers was ineffective, or, as in Rush et al., it had harmful effects.

ABSTRACT:The main conclusion of this review of 8 nutritional intervention studies during pregnancy is that, in mothers with protein‐energy malnutrition–either acute or chronic‐food supplementation during pregnancy can improve birthweight and decrease the incidence of low birthweight babies.
