摘要:
ABSTRACT:Using data collected from in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF/ET) programs, which have mushroomed worldwide during the past eight years, I summarize current clinical practices and results with regard to success rates, patient selection, ovulation induction, oocyte retrieval, semen collection, laboratory fertilization, embryo transfer, and pregnancy outcome. Each step may entail risks, clinical problems, and/or ethical issues. Among concerns that arise from reflection on the practices and issues are risks to offspring, psychologic/emotional effects, use of women in experiments, possible overuse of IVF, financial issues, and proposed future extensions of reproductive engineering.

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Twenty‐five women who tried in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF/ET) at six hospitals were interviewed. All expressed satisfaction with the procedure, but some voiced concerns about the way they were treated. Their comments, together with a review of IVF clinic promotional literature and the medical literature, suggest the need to investigate the way this technology is marketed, particularly the way success rates are calculated and communicated to patients, hospitals sell experimental procedures to patients, and physicians disclose the risks and disappointing possibilities during attempts at IVF/E

摘要:
ABSTRACT:Although most in vitro fertilization (IVF) attempts end in failure, most women who try IVF once try again one or more times. This paper is based on an interview study of twenty Canadian women who underwent at least one IVF procedure, and it describes the way in which failure affected their decision to try IVF again. Since undergoing IVF increases awareness of each step in the biological process of becoming pregnant, it allows a woman to think of herself as “getting closer” to becoming pregnant, depending on the number of steps she successfully completes in the process, even if her attempt ultimately fails. Since a subsequent attempt might progress even further, perhaps to pregnancy, it therefore becomes difficult to stop trying. Women must be informed of this aspect of IVF if they are to make informed decisions concerning its

摘要:
ABSTRACT:From 1980 to 1985 not only were more infants delivered at higher‐order multiple births, but more survived. The rise in multiple gestation has been attributed in part to the drugs and procedures used in the management of infertility and assisted conception, especially multiple embryo transfer after in vitro fertilization and multiple egg transfer in the gamete intrafallopian transfer procedure. Very often, survival of small infants from higher‐order multiple gestations taxes the resources of the medical and social services. If they survive the perinatal period, the feeding, nurturing, and physical care of triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, or sextuplets places extraordinary demands on their caretakers. The problems and risks extend far beyond individual clinical cases to the wider social ramifications of the birth and care of these child

摘要:
ABSTRACT:This study examined data from a larger project on the cultural context of first birth among low‐income women of Mexican origin giving birth in Los Angeles. Data on knowledge of cesarean birth and perceptions of the cesarean birth experience were collected. In addition, differences in perceptions of the experience between women giving birth vaginally and those giving birth by cesarean as reported in the literature were assessed. Five hundred eighteen women were surveyed, of whom 58 had a cesarean birth. Statistical analyses revealed few significant differences between the two groups with regard to childbirth knowledge and attitudes, which may indicate that Latinas are different from the Anglo women discussed in the literature. In their postnatal assessment, 28 percent of the women giving birth by cesarean reported dissatisfaction with the experience, the majority regarded cesareans as “normal,” and 11 percent thought they were at an advantage to have had cesarean births. These results suggest that cultural beliefs and attitudes may affect a woman's perceptions of the childbirth experience. The findings discussed here have implications for cross‐cultural research on childbirth for childbirth educators and for health care providers working in multicultural s
