In order to discover whether or not a Denis Browne splint is an effective orthosis in the conservative treatment of congenital club foot, we investigated clinically and radiologically 34 congenital club feet treated with full-time splint wearing after serial manipulations and casts. We found objectively that the correction achieved by the initial treatments was not improved but was at least maintained. However, the age when the splint was applied statistically influenced the changes in radiological measurements. The Denis Browne splint with a well-molded heel is an effective orthosis to maintain clinical and radiological results after initial treatments, especially when it is applied at an early age.

Twenty-four individuals, who were 16 years of age or younger when they sustained a fracture of the radial head or neck, were examined at a mean of 19 years (range 14–25 years) after injury. The 12 girls and 12 boys were a mean age of 11 years (range 5–16 years) when the fracture was sustained. Two were excluded due to late resection of the radial head following persisting pain. The fractures, which were of Mason type II in 19 and type III in three cases, were treated by mobilization in eight cases, plaster in eight, open reduction and internal fixation in three and closed reduction and plaster in three.At the follow-up examination, 19 (86%) had no complaints, while three (14%) had occasional pain. Flexion was decreased in the formerly injured compared with the uninjured elbow (139 ± 8° versus 142±5°;P<0.05). None had developed elbow osteoarthritis. Isolated, closed fracture of the radial head and neck during growth has a favourable, long-term outcome.

This study presents a retrospective evaluation of 57 patients who underwent a percutaneous epiphysiodesis for leg length discrepancy. Of these patients, 68.5% presented with a good result with a final leg length discrepancy of less than 1.5 cm, 14% with a fair result with a discrepancy of between 1.5 and 2 cm, and 17.5% showed a poor result with a leg length discrepancy of more than 2 cm. The percutaneous epiphysiodesis was found to be a safe and reliable technique. There were very few technical errors. The causes of failure were analyzed and compared with a previous study from the same department. Error in timing remains the main problem.

Five children (mean age 3.4 years) with solitary cystic tuberculosis of proximal femur or proximal tibia were treated by surgical debridement and curettage combined with anti-tuberculosis anti-biotherapy. The mean follow-up period was 4.3 years and clinical and radiological healing was observed in all cases. It was concluded that solitary cystic tuberculosis of long tubular bones, which was a rare manifestation in children, should be kept in mind especially for metaphyseal lesions in the lower limbs and should be differentiated from several osseous lesions including infections and bone tumours.
