The results presented show that the direct epifluorescent filter technique (DEFT) can be used to detect low numbers of osmophilic yeasts in creme fondant after pre‐incubation, or high numbers without pre‐incubation, and within 30 min. Pretreatment with trypsin and Triton X‐100 was necessary to achieve efficient filtration of the fondant. The hydrophobicity and adhesion to saliva‐coated hydroxyapatite ofStreptococcus salivariusHB and the mutants HB7, HBV5 and HBV51 were measured. The mutants HB7 and HBV51 showed a significant reduction in adhesion to salivacoated hydroxyapatite and hydrophobicity compared with the mutant HBV5 and the parent strain. This supports the view that hydrophobic interactions are important for bacterial attachment in the oral cavity and is in contrast to previous studies on the hydrophobicity of these strain

Electron microscopy was employed to examine the outer surface structures of a laboratory strain (NCTC 9012), a K88a strain (NCTC 10964) and a urine clinical isolate ofEscherichia coli. These were found to be, respectively: non‐fimbriate, flagellate; fimbriate, non‐flagellate; and fimbriate, flagellate. The effect of the antiadherent antimicrobial agent, taurolidine, on these structures was concentration and time‐dependent. Cells grown in the presence of sub‐inhibitory concentrations of taurolidine lose the ability to complete cell division and appeared filamentous. A higher concentration (2%) of taurolidine appeared to cause fimbriae, though not flagella, to become more compressed onto the cell surface. After 60 min contact with taurolidine fimbriae were not apparent on the cells. A serotyping system has been developed forAeromonas hydrophila, A. sobriaandA. caviaebased on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens. Antigens are detected by slide agglutination of boiled cells and the serotype is confirmed by tube agglutination. The antigens involved in the serotyping reactions were shown to be capable of sensitizing chicken red blood cells and were extractable by ethyl‐enediaminetetraacetate. In a l‐year study at Ironbridge on the Welsh River Dee theEscherichia colipopu‐lation varied over a 200‐fold range and the coliphage populations grown at 37°C (H. T. phage) and at 22°C (L. T. phage) each varied by over 100‐fold. Both theE. coliand H. T. phage counts were shown to have highly signiflcant seasonal fluctuations, which included troughs in summer and peaks in winter. The L.
