Mupirocin, an antibiotic produced byPseudomonas fluorescens, was active at low concentrations against methicillin‐sensitive, methicillin‐resistant, methicillin‐ and gentamicin‐resistant, and rifampicin‐resistant strains ofStaphylococcus aureus.Wild‐type strains ofEscherichia coliandSalmonella typhimuriumwere highly resistant (minimum inhibitory concentrations>75μg/ml), whereas envelope mutants were considerably more sensitive. Interspecies hydrogen transfer between rumen holotrich ciliate protoza and methanogenic bacteria has been demonstrated. As a result of the metabolic interaction withMethanosarcina barkeri, the metabolite profile ofIsotrichaspp. was altered and the production of butyrate and lactate was suppressed in the presence of the methanogen.Use of membrane‐inlet mass spectrometry confirmed that the presence of rumen holotrich ciliates reduced the apparent sensitivity of methanogenesis to the inhibitory effects of oxygen; a gas phase concentration of 7·4 kPa oxygen was required to inhibit methanogenesis in the presence of protozoa, while in pure cultures ofM. barkeri, methanogenesis was inhibited by a gas phase oxygen concentration of 1·0

The sensitivity of seven bacterial species inoculated on to sterile poultry meat and irradiated under various atmospheres (air, CO2, vacuum and nitrogen) was investigated. The irradiation sensitivities ofStreptococcus faecalisandStaphylococcus aureuswere unaffected by atmosphere. The other micro‐organisms (Pseudomonas putida, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Moraxella phenylpyruvicaand aLactobacillussp.) were more sensitive (their D10values decreased) when irradiated in atmospheres other than air. In general, a vacuum or CO2atmosphere during irradiation was found to have the most lethal effect. The survival ofPseudomonas aeruginosaATCC 27853 in sea water was minimally influenced by light, temperature and the presence of an associated marine microflora. Pre‐adaptation of cells to a salted medium attenuated the initial stress and even permitted their growth but did not modify their long‐term survival. Counts ofStaphylococcus aureusfrom samples of neck skin taken from poultry carcasses at different stages of processing showed that the numbers decreased approximately 10‐fold during scalding but increased by almost 1000‐fold during plucking, reaching up to 104/g. Swab samples taken from the defeathering machinery yielded counts ofca.103/swab at the entry to the first plucker but these increased toca.107at the exit, with a subsequent decrease through the second and third machines. Counts of other organisms growing on the Baird‐Parker isolation medium showed much lower levels at the exit to the first plucker, suggesting that this was the major site of contamination at whichS. aureusgrew preferentially. Bacteria were isolated from the sediment collected from one site above and one below the naphthalene‐polluted discharge from a coking plant.
