摘要:
Stable auxotrophic mutants were isolated by N‐methyl‐N'‐nitro‐N‐nitrosoguanidine treatment ofMycobacterium fortuitumNIHJ 1615,M. smegmatisNIHJ 1628 andM. vaccaeNIHJ 1637. The number of stable mutants obtained were 0.17, 0.46 and 0.02% of the surviving mutagenized cells screened for the three species, respectively. Mutants differed from their parents in a single nutritional requirement except in the case of SM29, a mutant ofM. fortuitum, and SM33, a mutant ofM. smegmatis, which differed from their parents in two auxotroph

The loss of free sulphite in meat products, and thereby preservative potential, is associated with an increase in bound sulphite resulting in part from acetaldehyde production by yeasts. A medium containing Schiff's reagent was devised to detect sulphite‐binding yeasts. Yeast colonies that caused red colouration were recorded as acetaldehyde producers. Initially acetaldehyde‐producing strains (as enumerated on the detection medium) represented 60% of the yeast flora of preserved minced lamb but, as the free sulphite level diminished, non‐sulphite‐binding yeasts increased in

The survival of a human strain ofCampylobacter jejuniin raw, pasteurized and ultra‐heat‐treated goat's milk stored at 5°, 10°, 15° and 20°C was studied. No viable units were detected in raw milk after 24 h at 20°C and 48 h at 15°C. None were detected in pasteurized milk after 48 h at 20°C. The sensitivity of four strains ofListeria monocytogenesto irradiation on poultry meat and in phosphate‐buffered saline was investigated. The D10values on poultry meat were 0.417–0.553 kGy depending on strain and plating medium used. Lower values were obtained in phosphate‐buffered saline. Generally tryptone soya yeast extract and McBride agars gave a better recovery (higher D10value) than listeria selective agar. The D10values forL. monocytogeneswere similar to those reported forSalmonellaspp. irradiated under similar conditions. Therefore irradiation doses suggested to eliminate salmonellas from poultry carcasses would also be sufficient to removeL. monocyto

The phylogenetic position ofStreptococcus cecorumwas determined by reverse transcriptase sequencing of 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid.Streptococcus cecorumformed a distinct group withEnterococcus faecalis(type species of the genusEnterococcus) and other enterococcal species, but was unrelated to members of the genusStreptococcus.On the basis of the present findings, it is proposed thatStreptococcus cecorumbe reclassified in the genusEnterococcus, asEnterococcus cecorumcomb. nov.
