The TECRA Salmonella Enzyme Immunoassay was compared with a conventional culture method for the detection of salmonella in naturally contaminated foods and animal feeds. Rappaport Vassiliadis enrichment prior to ELISA and photometric reading of the results gave 95% agreement with the conventional method. Presumptive positive results can be reported within 48 h.

Lactobacilli isolated from goats' milk were tested for their inhibitory effects towardLisleria monocytogenesandStaphylococcus aureusgrowth. Most of them were antagonistic against these pathogens, as demonstrated by a classical well‐diffusion method and a more sensitive deferred technique, named the ‘sandwich method’. Inhibitory zones, which were largely reduced in the presence of buffered and sugar‐limited medium, were not affected by protease treatment. On the contrary, a few streptococci exhibited inhibitory activity towardL. monocytogenes. Large zones of inhibition were observed, independently of the culture medium and sensitive to protease action, indicating the presence of proteinaceous antimicrobial compounds (bacteriocins). Therefore, the simple sandwich method was sensitive enough to discriminate between antagonistic activities supported by either acid production or bacteriocin

A typing method based on analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphisms has previously been developed forLegionella pneumophilaserogroup 1. Here data are presented demonstrating the utility of this method for typing strains of all otherL. pneumophilaserogroups described to date. The method, which is highly discriminatory, should be of considerable value in epidemiological investigations of legionella infections.

The influence of six fungitoxicants on growth and aflatoxin production byAspergillus flavuswas tested in liquid SMKY medium at two concentrations,viz. 0.1 and 0.5%. Thiram completely inhibited the aflatoxin production at 0.5% concentration. Other fungitoxicants showing more than 60% inhibition were bavistin and daconil. Vitavax (0.1%) and agrosan GN (0.1 and 0.5%) stimulated the growth of fungus and aflatoxin elaboration after 7 d of incubation. Dithane M‐45 moderately inhibited aflatoxin synthesis. The recent rise in the awareness of the occurrence of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in aquatic environments, with associated human health problems and animal deaths, has increased the need for rapid, reliable and sensitive methods of determining cyanobacterial toxicity. A luminescent bacterial toxicity test was assessed as a complement to the established mouse bioassay. Seventeen samples including pure cyanobacterial microcystin‐LR hepatotoxin, laboratory isolates and natural blooms of cyanobacteria were tested and toxicity data compared with mouse LD50, values. Microcystin‐LR and all five microcystin‐containing cyanobacterial samples, hepatotoxic by mouse test gave EC50values of<0.46 mg/ml in bioluminescence‐based Microtox assays. Of 11 samples non‐toxic by mouse bioassay, only two gave an EC50of<0.98 mg/ml by bioluminescence assay.
