Washed cell suspensions ofMycoplasma mycoidesoxidized glucose and pyruvate. In a growth medium containing peptone, yeast extract, and serum, yields obtained with pyruvate were comparable with those for glucose, suggesting that pyruvate is able to act as an energy source.Mycoplasma agalactiaeandM.F38 failed to oxidize glucose and glucose had no effect on growth yield. Pyruvate, however, was oxidized and markedly enhanced growth. Lactate was also oxidized by a number of mycoplasma strains but did not increase growth yield in statically incubated cultures.

All 100 strains ofClostridium perfringensstudied showed porphyrin fluorescence due to synthesis on a special medium. A majority (84%) of the same strains were capable of porphyrin fluorescence by the removal of iron from haem.

Mycelial cell walls from the potato blight fungus (Phytophthora infestans) (Mont.) de Bary were examined in the solid state by13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy with cross‐polarization and magic‐angle spinning. The spectrum was free from interference by spinning sidebands. The main component of the cell walls had the spectral properties of aβ‐(1,3′)‐glucan. Protein appeared to be present also. The presence ofβ‐(1,6′)‐linked glucose residues, cellulose or chitin was not ruled out, but there was no evidence for these as major components

The influence of pH on proteolysis in different fractions of human faeces was studied with a variety of chromogenic substrates. Various inhibitors ofDesulfovibrio desulfuricanswere examined for their selectivity in co‐cultures withMethanobacterium formicicum. Introduction of ampicillin dextrin agar (ADA) has revealed problems in details of the preparation. The final pH of the medium varied substantially between different laboratories. Measuring temperature has a pronounced effect on the pH (0·7 units lower at 50°C than at 6°C). Addition of agar during medium preparation resulted in a fall in pH of 0·5 units. If poured plates were stored in the refrigerator, the pH was reduced by 0·1–0·4 units, in particular during the first day. Recovery ofAeromonasfrom pure cultures and naturally polluted samples was unaffected by variation in pH between 7·1 and 8·3 but colony differentiation was optimal at a higher pH. The use of ADA at a final pH of 7·8 ± 0·2 (at 25°C) is recommended. Different types of dextrin differed in respect of solubility, fermentability and colony differentiation.
